Open turbo: mistake or good thinking?

Getting a new MK3, and I am probably going to just tear off the shitty exhaust before I have the new parts and run it with an open turbo. Any comments to how stupid this might be? I haven't even been able to look at the engine yet and the turbo position. Will I be getting high when I drive it from exhaust fumes in the cokpit? (Yes the supra's driver seat is a cokpit)

Anyway, don't flame or hate or whatever else that I am sure I will get. Just simple don't or do would suffice and why. Thanks a lot. I live in WA btw, no emissions laws. There is a noise law, but I will risk it to get rid of that back pressure I have read the exhaust causes.

Also, just out of curiosity, has anyone done this and dyno their car? If so what type of HP gains. Everything on the car I am getting is stock by the way, exception of a composite HG; brand new.

Thanks again. I am just an honest guy trying to get some help on the matter, please no flame. If this has been posted, again please no flame. Just simple statement that it has been posted before and if you are too lazy to type that but not the answer to my questions, then you would be considered a jack ass in my mind.

Plain and simple. A bad idea.

The reason you have an exhaust is to pipe flaming hot air out of the car. If you run open turbo, you will melt your firewall and everything else along with it under the hood, including the hood.

You shouldn't be worried about back pressure if you have a 3" exhaust and a ct-26. Maybe if you had a 70 trim or larger, then just run a 3.5"-4" exhaust. That will fix it. Hell, run open DP if you want. But think about where all the flames and hot gases end up in the end. On your parts? In your engine bay? Or just out into the air behind the car?

Sum up the words 'bad idea' well enough?

I say lock the thread lol before trouble ensues... *grabs popcorn*

PS- Buy me a new MKiii too while you're at it, I could really go for seeing 000001 on the odometer! : p

Derrrrr, thanks guys. I was completely spacing that exhaust is HOT... My bad, thanks for the quick replies. I will just run open DP. Any objections to that?

I guess I have read that part of the back pressure problem with the mk3 is the turbo elbow? Pound it out, attach DP, fixed? Thanks again.

Obviously it ain't NEW :icon_razz New to me that is.

do it and then take pics of the aftermath PLEASE.

Just because I like to toy with stuff, and it sounded fun.

^ Not that simple. -1

Just spend the money on a nice DP. I just ordered a megamouth 3" DP from Grimsta/Zankoku Perf. It should be on the porch when I get home! :naughty:

Yes, open DP is not a great idea either. Just get a nice 3" high flow cat to go with your full 3" system. What back pressure? lol

Yeah, i'm all for cheap mods, but that's as expensive as cheap gets. 1/2 hr with an open bung hole on my upper DP and I melted a few plastic hoses and the harness insulation. Spend on the 3"DP, they aren't all expensive, if you have no environmental conscience then bore out the secondary CAT, and if you must save money, get a cheap clamp on muffler to play with until you can afford a real exhaust. It will be pretty loud and pretty fast for under $300, and the DP you can keep using when you upgrade.

Why not run a 3" dp to the stock catback? You will still pick up power.

BTW, there is no such thing as backpressure. Just ask Figgie to explain it to you, lol

Okay, that sounds like a good idea speedgilligan, I am assuming you are referring to running exhaust pipes out the side of the car under the door? I could probably get my local shop to do that for me, and probably pretty cheap if I don't ask for a muffler or anything special. Sorry I don't know terms very well if this isn't what you are talking about.

No such thing as backpressure? I have read quite a few debates on backpressure, it seems like people say exhaust back pressure doesn't even exist on a built 2jz with 2.5 inch piping. I would believe this but I have to ask why the HP boost when the exhaust is gone then? (Pardon my ignorance.)

Nghty89, I have also been looking at the split DP's with the waste going into a separate pipe, and the manufactures claim some 30hp increase over OTHER DP's. This is an automatic back click on the browser for me, no way is it a 30hp increase, or should I believe this?

I have also read some about the exhaust being really restrictive on the engine, but not because of the mk3 cats. Is this because of the turbo elbow or some other fault in the exhaust?

jdub, if I wanted a FWD fart-cannon I would certainly obtain the wonders that is a civic. :icon_razz
