ok i was driving home today and for the past few days my car has been running pretty odd and it smells like crap when i stand by me exhaust and i think my tranny is on its way out (a340e) anyway my friend was driving behind me and i got on it accross the bridge and he didnt see any smoke at all he just said he could smell my exhaust and it smelt like crap, like boat exhaust he said it smelled rich as hell and like oil was mixed in and like a burned out clutch. the thing is how can i have the burnt up clutch smell with an auto, i really really hope i didnt blow the clutches in my auto or fuck up my torque converter, i have a tiney little oil leek coming from bellhousing and i think i may have a boost leek but there is no hard evidence, my coolant boils after driving up hill in 100 degree weather but thats just the ehat i geuss. :::sigh::: anyone have any ideas im getting pretty pissed and theres a nice MKIV for sale that i could probably afford with a small loan.

i want it fixed but i cant afford an r154 yet so i have my new tranny cooler and new atf waiting to be put in.

I doubt your tranny is the cause of the smell. How much water boils over?? That coolant may give you a smelly smell if it goes out of the overflow bottle.
Rich running may not smoke black, but might smell like mine when I let off after speed, (I run it a tad bit rich) its a very 'icky' oder from the cat converter.

I doubt it's your tranny. I burned mine up a few months ago, I don't remember an odor. When I hear odor & exhaust in the same sentence, the first thing I think is to check the cat converter. If it's clogged, it stinks like shit.

None of your fucking business
If you could afford a mk4, then you should be able to fix this problem... Good luck with your choice! just make sure you paint the mk4 lime green or tangerine!! JK don't, please. Fix your mk3 :). Don't know how sorry...

if that is the case he would have a lot of white smoke with whatever smell there is, to check just look at your exhaust.. or under the car.. look for dark red sap-like substance.. thats tranny fluid. if there is a leak it is a cheap fix at a transmission shop (not fun to do by yourself though)

mmm... the smell of a clogged catalyitic converter (or two).

tastey!

in all seriousness, i had this problem on my N/A. the cat was all gunked up, and it literally smelled like poop. i gutted it, and the problem disappeared. of course, this is only valid if you still have a cat (or cats)

ok perhaps i should add the details this is on a 3'' cooleeze dp and elbow no precat and my stock cat is totally gutted out and washed with a brush for no residue, just the cat back is stock. could this throw off my o2 to the point where im running rich or just air leek somewhere?

i have no cats thats why i am worrying about the S$^t smell.

btw even if i got the mkIV i can still afford to keep my current supra so no matter what it is staying.
