Ok so for those who havent seen the couple of threads ive posted... heres a quick summary of the situation. LONG BUT PLEASE READ IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT AUTOS....

i have an 87 NA auto. it runs PERFECTLY. however the auto is giving me problems. i took out a nappy looking 87 ect ecu and put in a spare 91 ect ecu not thinking anything of it. then i drive the car i put it in D and it feels like its in 4th gear. so i think ok either ECT ecu needs to be compatible (an 87 one) or a solenoid is bad. so today i go to the junkyard and get another 87 na auto ect ecu.... and pull off the pan and pull out the solenoids...bench test them...and they both click open and closed fine. so the solenoids are good. however i only tested the number 1 and number 2.... so the lockup is just ASSUMED good.

so i put a new filter and gasket on and the solenoids back in, bolt the pan back up and fill it up with ATF. i plug in the 87 ECT ecu. test drive it.....before if put into drive it wouldnt MOVE at all unless you pushed the gas pedal...then it would SLOWLY go like i said as though it were in 4th...well this time i put it in drive and let go of the brake and it moves forward like normal. but i go to step on the gas and now it feels like its in 2nd gear. it quicker acceleration then before but still bogging down until it gets higher in rpm then it goes like normal....

also i can put it in L and in 2 and it works perfectly...pulls strong (for an NA lol) and i can even do burnouts no problem ;)

now...im out of answers...BUT theres a harness going into the top of the pan on the side of the tranny (drivers side) it branches out to a 3 pin connector on the side (has what seems to be two white wires and a blue wire ...they are kinda dirty) and then the connector attached to it a SINGLE green wire that is cut and goes nowhere...

then the harness continues on and go to a 6pin connector that has mostly all white wires it seems...but this connector isnt plugged into ANYTHING and icant find anything to plug it into.... theres a 4 pin connector by the circuluar plugs but it doesnt fit etc....

im convinced this is the problem and the number 1 and 2 solenoids arent getting when they are supposed to or something.... does ANYONE have any info on what this harness is for?

PLEASE HELP...ANY INFO WOULD BE GREAT I NEED TO FIX THIS ONE PROBLEM SO I CAN GET THIS CAR SOLD BEFRE IMOVE ON FRIDAY!

THANKS!

ok heres a quick update since i decided i wasnt going to sleep until i solved this...

i didnt get a chance to look before for the place to plug in the 6 pin connector...my friend did and didnt find anything...i went back and pulled out another auto harness i had and found the 6 pin connector next to the circular plugs...so i roamed around that area in the engine bay and found the connector hiding on top of the starter...so i plugged it in...

havent had a chance to test drive yet but im willing to bet that solves most if not all of my problems...

heres some pics of both connectors...
i still need to knw what this green wire is for? thanks!

now i went and test drove it with the 6 pin connector plugged in....and now i ONLY have first...lol..as in it accelerates hard in 1st but then wont shift into 2nd....

sooo whats the deal? did i get a bad ect ecu? should i try the 91 ect ecu? ughhhhh

dont know much about automatics, but if i were in your position I would be systematically looking through this http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/library/Wiring/index.html looking for a clue as to the wires and what they do.

believe me i have been....i cant find a single solid green wire anywhere near the tranny that is part of a 3 pin connector with just one pin being used...

The solenoids can test good on the bench and then not work when they have oil pressure or just from heat even. It happened on my a340 in my truck before. They looked good with a ohm meter, and clicked with 12v applied, then suddenly they would be open circuit for no reason.
It would not downshift to first about every 3rd or 4th time I would come to a stop, it would stay in 2nd. I have not heard of a lockup or od solenoid going bad, the transmission parts places don't even sell them because no one ever needs one.

thanks for the replies guys...yeah i have been searching slowly and learning more about the auto now that i havent had a choice lol...

i recently found out that the green wire was for the speed sensor and am under the assumption that without that (and the fact that the speedo cable is broken so the speed sensor in he gauge cluster has no signal either) the ect ecu has no idea when to shift and thats why it doesnt...

SO im going to wire the green wire back in and i SHOULD be good to go now huh?

and thanks aaron with the info...ill keep an eye on them also....

if your speed cable is broken it won't shift out of first, period. when i changed LEDS in the gauges I broke the speedo cable where it connected to the tach and it wasn't moving, and that's why when I drove it around it refused to get out of first even revving up to 5,000rmps. Before that, when it was wobbling, the car would "hickup" sometimes shifting up/down/up/down, etc, etc .... once I replaced the speedo cable all my problems dissapeared.

So without the speedo cable, you're screwed.

btw - i have a brand new #2 speed sensor (the one that bolts on to the tranny) that is used for no more then 1000mi and a brand new #1 solenoid from toyota never installed (i'm going to try and return it even tho it was a special order) ... but if you need them, let me know... i paid over $200 per pc for them.

It's def the speed sensor...and, it will cause exactly the problem you are having. When I swapped my new performance tranny in, I had the speed sensor in the pic below installed. Would not shift out of first and the OD light was on indicating a tranny code. I swapped the sensor out of the old tranny and "poof"...problem solved. Either the speed sensor for an 87-88 is different from the 89' plus or the sensor was for a non-ABS car. (mine is an '89 w/ ABS)

The sensor is located on the tranny tail, drivers side. Note the wire color is different from your pic....red, white, black on this sensor.

I have a 86.5 N/A Automatic parts car. I have the speed sensor, speedo cable, and ecu. I want $40 shipped for the cable, and you could have the others for the cost of shipping. Supramania discount!!!!!!!

The 88 and 89 are different... one is 2 wires the other is 4.... one is $190 and the other is $350 from toyota ;)

Not sure about the ABS. I was having a problem like this because the auto swap I ended up getting was from who knows what, and the sensor didn't work and they don't have my old sensor so I got screwed. The sensor on my car now fixed the problem but cost me the $190+tax, etc. I tried the $350 one and it didn't work for me, it also had 2 wires and not 4... both have a 4-wire connector and will wire up though.

ok i dont have any codes when i did the diagnostic tests...

SO...im going to hook up the green wire and fix the speedo cable... (the part that is broken is the small part from the tranny to the larger part)....then HOPEFULLY this will work...

make sense?

Interesting...the one above in the pic is a 3 wire and the one I pulled off my old tranny to fix my shift problem was also a 3 wire. Must be an ABS connection.
