Oil pump ???

What is the best oil pump to use on a built motor? I was thinking of buying one from HPF But was not sure if this is better then just a replacement new oem unit?

So should I spend 215 on a oem Or 250 on the high flow?? Should bolth be shimmed?

I used an OEM pump and shimmed it with 2 washers (~3mm)...engine warm w/ 5W-30, that gives me 15 psi at idle and 40 psi at 3000+ rpm.

My thought on a "hi-volume" pump is that there is two ways to get additional oil flow...volume or psi (or rate). With volume, you are still going to be limited by the tubing dia under the crank unless you change it out like some guys have done. The oil channels in the head/block are a fixed size, but large enough not to be a limiting factor.

This same dia tubing is also going to limit flow when you increase psi...you can increase flow by increasing psi, but only to a certain point before it becomes inefficient and more of a restriction to flow.

I wanted a little more oil flow at idle...5 psi has always kinda bothered me I achieved the flow I wanted for the motor by shimming the relief valve with 2 washers. Also, keep in mind bearing clearances also determine oil pressure...you want the clearances on the tight side of spec.

I can get you an ITM pump for $170 shipped and it is the same as the one toyota puts on there shelf for sale. Only difference is the toyota name has been grinded off and I have a photo to upload that proves it.

^ ITM is good quality stuff. If I was going to replace an oil pump, I'd be getting it from them before I got the same thing from Toyota.

I've never done a new oil pump during a rebuild. Clean the old one up really good and check it and see if it's in specs still, because honestly, whens the last time you heard of one failing? Save the $200 and get yourself a MHG or ARP hardware with the money. That's just me though.
