I am replacing the oil pump seal. I did a dumb thing, I drove a sheet metal screw into the midpoint of the seal between the inner and outer circumfrance on the seals flat forword facing surface. The was to give me someting to grap onto to pull it without touching the seal bore or the shaft suface. The problem is while tying to get a bite with the screw it barely contacted the flat surface behind the seal putting a mark on it from the screws tip. This surface has a slot on the very botttom (possibly an oil port) and doesn't appear to be a moving part. What is it and do you think I've hurt anything?

^ Sounds like he is from the description. If this is the case, the flat surface you are talking about behind the seal stops you from pressing the seal all the way through, and if it is slightly marred it shouldn't be a big deal as that's not a sealing surface. Take some pics so we can see exactly what you are talking about/how bad it is.

The oil shaft seal I highly assume, no? Not the front main.
Your fine if it's the oil pump shaft seal cause it has a shaft retainer that you marked on. No biggy

Your seal 13522R and the plate you marked 13574P

That is no seal. There is no seal for that. Actually the rear timing case is the seal.

The 13522r holds the plate for the bolt to hold the shaft in place.(that was a weird sentence.)

Now im really lost unless its the front main.

Your right thats how the pulley gets mounted. My bad, brains a bit off today.

Just giving you a hard time. I still love you.

@OP: Have you tried smoothing it out? How bad is the impact, any pics? If the damage is on the vertical surface I think you'll be fine, as long as the smooth edge that the outside of the seal contacts is still undamaged. Let's wait for some more experienced builders to chime in though.

I will get pics when I get home. Another question, I used the pvc coupling trick to install the front main seal. I'm using a Toyota seal which has a tiny ridge near the outer edge. Should I keep going until the ridge is in the seal bore or stop just when it contacts the seal bore in which case the seal face would be very slightly protuding out.

until its flush with the case not the crank, the crank area should be sticking out for the sealing surface.

so is it the front main seal or the oil pump shaft seal???

Either way its the same thing for both.

If it does leak afterwards the rear timing cover is part of the sealing surface for hg. So i would do your best and if it does become a problem head will need to come off.

Here is a pic of the new front main seal. Does it look like its in correctly? The other pic is to show the mark on the piece behind the oil pump seal.
