Okay well today I changed my oil because I needed to change a few gaskets. Oil was only 2 weeks old, filter was a PITA to get off (Had to go buy a filter wrench and even that had a hard time getting it off). Fill up the oil with some 10w40, here's where the trouble starts. I was always told that 1 extra quart is ok, and that it should be added just to be safe. I know I'm not alone on this, it's been said SEVERAL times especially in this section. My service manual says 4.8 quarts w/ filter for 7mge. I put in 6 quarts. I figured 1 quart extra is ok just like always, so I put in 6 quarts. It was only 1.2 quarts over, no big deal I figured. Started the car, oil pressure guage didn't seem to be working. Then I remembered I had knocked the sensor off the little platform, so I fiddled with it for a bit and then started the car. Oil pressure rose up to about 40 psi, seemed normal to me for a cold start. Everything seemed fine, checked for leaks from new gaskets, everything was a-ok. So fast forward an hour and I'm ready to hit the freeway for a long drive. Start heading out there, I notice oil pressure seems to be rising up a lot more than usual. I figured it was just cause the oil was new or still cold, so I kept going. Oil pressure kept rising. After about 5 minutes, I noticed it went up to the top of the guage. I immediately panicked and took it out of gear as fast as possible to let the oil pressure lower. Well it dropped, all the way down to 0. I pulled over immediately, left the car running, popped the hood and first checked to make sure 1. the oil filter was still there 2. i wasn't leaking oil and 3. that the guage sender was still on there. Everything seemed fine. I turned off the car and dissasembled the intake to get to the oil pressure sender. Fiddled with it for a bit, seemed to get it on there but it was all ripped and torn and I wasn't exactly quite sure how to get it on, so I got it on best as I could, put the intake back on, and started the car. Still no oil pressure, and now I notice smoke coming out of the exhaust. Not a tremendous amount of smoke, but it looked like I had a cold start in 40 degree weather. So I shut off the car and call my local auto parts store to see if they could help me. They immediately say 1 quart of oil is DEFINETELY bad, so I get underneath the car and start draining oil. About 30 minutes later, I have the car EXACTLY at the full mark on the dipstick. Fiddle with the oil pressure sender some more, and start the car. Still no oil pressure, still smoking out the exhaust. Now is when I have my mom follow me back home (10 min drive). Everything seemed normal, aside from the fact that my guage was reading below 0. This was very strange, I didn't know if it was actually the oil pressure, or if the guage sender was having trouble reading. So I drove home, everything seemed fine except for the guage not functioning. Once I got home I turned off the car, and noticed it was no longer smoking out of the exhaust. I asked my mom when it stopped smoking, and she said maybe 20 seconds after we started driving. And now I'm here.
Cliffs: Put in 6 quarts of oil (Requres 4.8), was always told 1 extra quart is ok. Oil pressure reached the top of the guage after 5 minutes, took out of gear and it dropped slowly to 0. Car started smoking after I shut off/turned back on. Drained out the oil until it read EXACTLY at FULL, fiddled with guage sender to try and get a reading. Started car, drove home, still no oil pressure on guage (Tried fiddling with it to get a reading but couldn't quite get it), car stopped smoking after ~20 seconds.
I'm HOPING that everything is ok and the guage just isn't reading. The car seemed fine except for the guage.
