Hi,

Apologies if this is a stupid question, or if there's somewhere I should have looked first, I've had a hunt around but I've not spied anything. Basically, I'm just wanting to check what kind of oil pressure I should be getting on my engine, it's a dead standard 7M-GTE, and I'm using the dashboard oil pressure gauge to read it.

At idle, the pressure tends to vary between 40psi when cold, to just above 20psi when hot. This seems low to me, but I thought I'd check, as my buddy's is similar, and they might just be like that. I've only had the car a week, and it's my first, so I'm wanting to perform preventative maintenance where necessary!

Spec at hot idle is around approximately 4.5 psi. So 20psi at hot idle is pretty good. Sounds like you have a shimmed pump to me. Oh but I hope you're not getting your readings from the stock Oil Press. gauge...It's not very accurate.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

The stock gauge is what I'm using yeah, is it worth looking at an aftermarket gauge then? I'm assuming my gauge (stock) measures in PSI, I could be wrong lol, anyway, my reading is off the stock toyota gauge and at hot idle it sitting just above the 20 mark on the guage. I take it I shouldn't lose any sleep over this then?

I wouldn't worry about the pressure, it sounds good. An aftermarket gauge would be a worthwhile investment for you though. It's always good to keep an eye on what your oil pressure is doing.

Stock gauge IS accurate, it just doesn't have as many lines to tell exactly what the pressure is and it's dampened so it doesn't react as fast...

Yeah, on the stock gauge, I get ~20psi at warm idle and about ~45psi at anything above about 1500RPM. So that sounds normal. I thought it was low, too, until I saw the TSRM, which basically says any oil pressure is a good thing...
