My 88 7mge oil pan gasket seeps and is in general bad shape. The engine runs excellent and only leaks oil around the pan. Considering the pain in the arse it appears to be to remove the oil pan, if I do it, what elso should I do while its off. Besides stopping an oil leak other benefits to taking this on?

Since you either have to pull the engine or drop the subframe might be good to pull the engine and do the rear main at that time and any other hose/gaskets that look like they need replacing.

Dont use a cork gasket. Go to toyota and get a tube of FIPG or some 3m three bond/yamabond/suzkibond etc.

+1.
Use FIPG.

Your gonna have to, as mensioned, pull the motor so might as well kill two birds with one stone and fix whatever else might need fixing.

You dont have to pull the motor to do the oil pan gasket, hell I have done many rod bearings with the motor in the car. You will need an engine hoist though. Anyways just take the nuts off the motor mounts, unscrew the sub frame bolts about an inch or so out, hook engine hoist to motor and lift it up until you hit the trans tunnel, if you need more clearance you can take off the trans mount too. Now you will be able to get to and undo the oil pan bolts. Once their all out drop the pan down, you wont be able to get it out because the oil pump will be in the way, so take it out and drop it into the pan. Then you can take the pan with pump in it out of the car. Its tight but doable, much better than pulling the motor IMHO. Also air tools really help here because you will wear yourself out unscrewing all of the bolts by hand. Within a few weeks hopefully I am putting some bearings in a friends turbo supra 87, so i will try to get all pics and do a complete writeup.

Nice!
Never really thought of just "lifting" the motor/trans,

Can't wait to see the write up

There is nothing wrong with a cork gasket, I always use them on the oil pan and never had any problems. FIPG is recommended by most though. And you shouldn't have to pull the entire engine, you could attempt what meta did if you don't have the man power.

I think I gonna agree with this.^^ It just come down to time/ money. It's gonna cost you less if you buy a gasket kit, rather than replacing each individal gaskets as needed. Why do it twice? Hell, you may as well see if the engine needs rings/ valves while your taking it apart, that way you do it one time, and not taking it apart later to rebuild it. Agian, time verse's money.
