it depends on if you using cork or gasket material, the cork should only be hand tight with a screwdriver type handle and socket attatched as tight as you can get it with that just using your bare hand, the gasket material your gonna have to tighten alot more and your gonna use a ratchet, if u tighten the cork to 9 ft/lbs it will split and your gonna have leaks everywhere!

teflon tape! dont wrap the threads per usual use of teflon tape, but pretend youre making a gasket with it (wrap the bottom most threads and shoulder where the bolt meets the pan). works like a charm every time.

Sorry if i'm intruding but i didn't want to start a new thread for this. Is it possible to change oil pan gasket without pulling the engine? Also is it possible to replace the oil pan without pulling the engine?

Yeah it's alot of work to do with the engine in the car. If I remeber it requires dropping half the suspension and jacking the motor up off the mounts.

there is no oil pan "gasket" per se, for the 7m. it's FIPG (formed in place gasket) which is like super-sticky RTV sealer.
