Where could oil seep from to have it on the top outside of my filter. I changed the valve cover gaskets last week and its still there. My oil consumpstion decresed 3 fold after the valve cover gaskets so i know they are doing there job. Any suggestion are appreciated as always

^ I have used that stuff on pwr steering and coolant in my auto class. Might be worth asking about. My guess is it is either the rubber gasket on the oil filter or mabey the valve cover is not tight(Mabey a chip in the rubber gasket on the filter or valve cover?) . Just my 0.02. Oh, when was your last oil change?

The exact same time as my valve cover job, along with spark plugs, id say 2-3 weeks ago

did you do it yourself? could be a hole in the filter maybe? it would be pinhole size but hey...anythings possible.

there isnt anything i can think of below the exaust manifold that could leak oil besides the oil dipstick or the oil filter itself....did you look at the head just below the covers and see if it is oily there?

if the oil filter was leaking with enough pressure to spray oil up and onto the filter i'd think you'd know quickly where the leak was....

unless it only leaks at high oil pressure, and only when cold (no heat expansion to tighten the fit)....but that's stretching my guess...dont take it too seriously. lol

my friend does it for me.Im pretty sure he tightens it well because everytime he goes to take the old filter off he bitches and says who put this on last time, knowing it was him.I use a k&n filter so its hard to say if its the filter causing it. I thought the valvecovers would have solved it.If theres a hole it must be on every one of my filters for the last 9 months, even on the frams, before the switch to stricly k&n's.

no hole then. try and check the side of the head for oil...its the only way i can see it coming down, UNLESS oil is leaking from the front of the engine, and following the coolant pipes or block rearward and somehow going up your filter. i'm talking about the two metallic (or black if covered in grease) silver pipes under the exaust manifold. you can only see these with a mirror or exaust removal.

if not from the front i think oil is coming from above, going down the head, around the exaust manifold and dripping.

did your but use the selant on the front of the valve covers? TSRM says to put a bead along the front cam bearing where the valve cover gasket meets it. it could be coming from there, or the valve c. gasket is loose or got crimped funny.

one of my old VC gaskets had a warped spot where it fell out on instillation and got pinched there for who knows how long...

Tho i didnt do the work myself, im pretty sure he put beads when doing the valve covers.

From What i can see ealier this afternoon i did notice what seems to be a lot oil around from the head area and then im guessing seeping down to the oil filter and then all over the suspension components.Im not losing alot like i was before the valve cover swap but im definetly losing. My buddy suggested something about around the distrubuter, inside the was some seal or something maybe, sorry for my newbishness. All i know is the head will be coming off very very soon, i just need more time to dd before downtime.

the dizzy o-ring is probably crap. (maybe...its probably what your friend was talking about)

what year is your car and has it been replaced? mine was ROCK HARD and broke like plastic when removed...i had to cut/break it. its just one o-ring on the shaft housing of the distributor.... if it leaks it will squirt oil out and down the side of the head. include forward momentum of the car and it could run rearward as well and make a mess.

heres the TSRM diagram, its the o-ring pictured below the shaft.

this COULD be the problem...not sure. its a cheap o-ring but you'll need to remove the distributor, paying attention to what position it's in before removal, and have a timing light avalable for resetting your timing once installed.

why are you removing the head? by dd you mean daily driving right?

Thanks, i believe thats what he was talking about.Ill leave all the technical stuff to him, im sure he knows about the timing and such, and we do have a light available. The head will be coming off for a mhg,and a head rebuild w/ some goodies for a killer price. Yes i daily drive my car 55 miles one way to school daily, ive already blown one motor so i want to keep my new investment in tiptop shape.Im bothered by something that shouldnt be dripping under the hood, and im tracking down the source.Figit i believe you guessed it.Thankyou and ill report back when we(he) can get under the hood.

ok. you can look yourself too maybe... if you havent already. i cant think of anywhere else it could leak from though without going and looking at my engine. i could but i have a pretty good memory and dont remember any oil lines on that side of the engine.

there is a slight possibility the oil is moving forward....if you cant find it after checking the dizzy.

good luck, hope i helped.
