I know it's not a 7m, but maybe some of you guys have some 5M experience or it's similar to the 7m. On the front of my engine, it was leaking oil out from what looked to be under the No.2 timing cover (upper rear plate) so I figured it was the gasket behind it. Well looks like it might be leaking oil from between the cylinder head and the block. my FSM says to put RTV in the corners of the front. and I checked... the machine shop did... theres RTV there. Any ideas on what to do? or things to check into? motor has 0 miles. I started it up i think last month and noticed it had an oil leak from the front and a oil galley port that needed plugged on the side. I got the oil port plugged up today... it was a metric thread 10x1.0 i think. nobody carried a plug so I used a Vaccum port deal from an intake manifold and welded the nipple hole shut after cutting it off. so All I gotta do is stop this front end leak and I can drive the car.

on my 5m it was leaking from the stud that the timing belt tensioner pivots on. If it is loose take it out, clean it and put it back in with lok-tight.

my 7M is leaking in where the timing belt is. Its from the headgasket im pretty sure... I dont know what im gonna do either guess pull the cover off and clean really well and put some rtv in there and hope to god that it stops leaking....

how can I have a bad HG with 0 miles? I have a metal head gasket and ARP stud kit.[/QUOTE
If your engine has o miles and your leaking oil in the timing cover area with a metal head gasket, and the crankshaft, oil pump and cam shaft seals are all new then maybe your block wasnt milled properly for the mhg,it has to be (EXTREMLY FLAT FLAT)also what crf_rider said about the rear timing cover.JUST TRYIN TO HELP MAN:evil2:

yeah the block was decked and head too. I just went out there and checked som stuff. It looks like the lower rear timing cover was shaved flat with the block b/c I can see the shiny surface it has and it's perfectly level with the block. I think my oil leak was coming from behind No2 cover plate... (upper rear plate). It wasn't shaved and the bottom is hanging up on the HG. b/c I held it up against the head making sure it was above the HG and put the bolts in and you could tell they were tight against the bottom of the holes. but if I let the cover go down and over the front of the HG the bolts went right in. So it looks like i need my uuper rear timing cover Shaved down a bit. Any ideas how to do that?

the upper rear cover is just for dust. It does not come in contact with oil.

EDIT: I was thinking 7M. Nevermind.

LOL

On the 5M the upper rear cover has a "tennessee gasket" that blocks oil from running out of the head or somin. i'm 99% sure this is my problem, b/c it wasn't shaved so it's not sitting like it should and left a gap at the bottom of the gasket for oil to run out of. b/c even the gasket from that cover was oil soaked. oil runs down... not up. this gasket is ABOVE the head gasket. So it'd be hard for oil to be leaking from the head gasket and traveling UP to the No.2 cover gasket.
