ive got oil in the timing belt case and also on both sides of the front of the motor. I just put it together. New seals and gaskets. Iam in the process of pulling the front covers off. if anyone knows a common reason this occurs please let me know. meanwhile i will be checking seals and gaskets. Any thoughts would be welcome.

^ what they said... Only two seals on the lower half of the motor that might alow oil behind the front engine cover where the timing belt is housed would be the front crankshaft seal and the oil pump drive seal. I can't think of much else. Take off the front cover, have a can or two of brakleen handy and see what ya got.

cam seals, headgasket, aux shaft (for the oil pump), front main... think if they didn't apply FIPG on the front cam caps it would leak as well...

What Poodles said, plus one more. There's a gasket between the rear timing cover and the block itself.

There are also a couple plugs that connect to high pressure oil galleries IIRC, any one of those missing would make for mayhem on a large scale.
