Ok, I'm sure this has been asked before but what is a good grade of oil to use in a 7M-GE in rapid changing weather, I have been using 10w-40, but in a previous post I saw that people were using 5w-50, that just seemed a little thick. Any help would be great

I'm using 20W-50 Amsoil Synthetic, only due to more then one source indicating it can/should be used in this application.

BTW, IMO your sig is a wee bit big.

For any thing turbo, try and stay away from oils that have a high range of viscositys (sp?)

Stay with a 10w30 or 20w50. Better yet, stay with a straight 30 weight for winter and a straight 50 weight for summer.

Amsoil has the highest HTHS ratings, other then Redline; however Amsoil oils they say will still work in colder weather. Redline plasters all over their site that even the 10W-40 should only be used in hot climates or racing. And the 20W-50 is forbidden for anything other then race use. I assume thats how they are able to get a HTHS number of 6.x though (very very high), and thats why I mentioned Amsoil specifically and not just the weight.

Standard Amsoil 20W-50 has a rating of 4.9, the Series 2000 "race" oil is 5.1.

IJ I guess they don't ship international huh?

well, you guys are aware that the TSRM, and owners manual both let you know what type of oil you should run in which conditions right?

I just got my engine in and I filled it with Quaker State 10-30W...IS that ok for a Turbo car?
It should work. Oil is not somewhere that you want to skimp on these cars, or any turbocharged car, for that matter.

It would help if we knew what kind of temp range you drive in.

Yes, everyone states their oil (I've always liked 20w50 because thats as heavy as I can buy it) but doesnt mention their conditions.

For instance, I live in south Florida...the temperature never goes above 95*F and never below 45*F, so I use heavier shit. More recently I've been using 10w-40, just because its a bit hard to find 40w in Royal Purple or Mobil 1...otherwise, I'd always run straight 40. IMO in my conditions it is the best to use.

Like Orion stated, it depends on your climate.

If you were to run straight 50w in 30 or below, you have a good chance of blowing seals because the oil would be running 80+psi untill it had a chance to warm up. And I don't mean you starting the car and letting it idle for 20 minutes.

A mates brother is a supplier for "Anglomoil" it's used in Longhaul Trucks and Earth moving equipment and they have a High Performance Motor blend that's 10/w50 full synthetic.

He did me a deal on 15 litres but even at full retail it's less than half what I'd pay for the Amsoil without shipping from interstate!

I've done some research on oil recently due to Honda requiring me to use whats called MA spec oil I wanted to know why they made such a big deal out of it just like so many here make a big deal about use this dont use that. So if your're up to some reading check out this site. Like the last poster says Rotella is great stuff, and will start using it next time I change my XR400's oil In my vehicles I use Castrol 40wt GTX here in Socal in my Supra and Chevron Delo 400 40wt in my dodge van.
