Oil Catch Can

My motor is almost back together and I want to use a catch can.
My question is do I need a vent(Breather) setup with the can?

Do I just take 2 hoses from the cam covers and connect the 2 hoses to the catch can? I have seen a few setups like this but not sure if it is the "proper" PCV setup..

Most people run it from the valve covers to the catch can, and then another line to the intake piping before the manifold on NA's and before the turbo on...obviously turbos. Make sure the catch can is on the intake side of the engine too.

OK.. so could I connect both cam covers with a T fitting run the single hose into the can and the put a small breather filter on the other can fitting?

I thought I read somewhere this would act as a boost leak or something..:icon_conf I just want to make sure my setup is right.

OK.. Well I just had the head rebuilt and I installed a stock HG with Copper spray. New cooling lines, had the intake mani cleaned and removed EGR. I also cleaned out the Intercooler and I am installing hardpipes.. Sooo all should be good. That's why I want to route to a catch can.. I want to keep it as clean as I can..

Yep. Tee the two valve covers together, then into the can. Route the other fitting to the accordian hose so it gets vacuum when the turbo spools.

Although, I think I'm right there with ya.... ;)

While you can use the JAZ can with no problems, you really should have it sealed without breather and a hose going to the accordian.
You need some sort of vacuum source to scavenge the vapors out of the valve covers, otherwise the vapors aren't being forced in the can. You need a way to pull them in.

Ok!! Now that's what I needed. The info on mounting to the cold side was great as well.. Luckily I have a 88 NA in the garage and will probably just use that hard pipe.

YES.


You 10000000000% must have vacuum comming off the top of the valve covers through the catch can. If you don't YOU WILL BLOW seals, front and rear main to be exact.

So with the link that sheaff provided, what kind of in line filter should be used and should it be hook up to the vaccum line or the line from the valve covers?

The filters on the cam covers approach clog up quickly and then you are done. That is not the correct way to do it.

You can drain the catch can back to your sump, that is how Volvo does it on many of their production cars (they call it an oil separator). I would agree that its better if the crud in there is kept out of the engine, but if low maintenance is your goal then self-draining to the sump is workable.
