Looking for a good write up on installing an oil catch can. I am about to get one, but don't know what kind and how to install it. Thanks, Bob.

i got a used Greddy oil catch can. it has two ports on the top of it. i got the pipe from my old N/A motor that connects the valve covers into one tube (had one already, but one came with the can), ran that to one nipple on the catch can, and the other over to the accordian pipe. that way there's vacuum to help pull the vapors to the can.

i mounted it near the brake booster, on the COLD side of the motor. the can stays way cooler than if it were mounted on the hot side, thus helping the oil and water vapors to condense. :)

heres one pic. it's not the best. if you cant see what's going on in it, i'll get another. this isnt a new pic, but i found it in my PC and drew lines on it so the hoses are more visable. ;) ps, it's big:)

why do you guys always run the lines all over the place for the catch can.

I think the less lines the better

READ the post;)

theres only one place that ALWAYS has vacuum on a turbo car... which is where i routed my vacuum source to, and there's only ONE cold side of the motor, the intake side... which is why my lines run "all over the place." i'd rather have functional "lines all over the place" than non-functional, pretty lines, mounting the catch can near a hot source where no vapors will condense in it... thus making it useless in it's entirety...

to answer JAV's question below without bumping this wicked old thread:

Hey shaeff is the hole at the bottom of that can for when you need to empty the can?

yes, but i just remove it, pull off the four allen head screws on the top, and clean it out that way. i'd rather have a super-clean inside of the catch can than one that's just empty and still gummed up. you'd be surprised how much goo gets built up in there!

on a side note: vavle cover breathers= bad idea. they'll quickly get clogged with oil vapor and condensation residue (which is a nasty mess, and smells bad too), and soon they'll stop venting. (then think to yourself- "how's the positive crankcase pressure going to get out?" i'll leave that up to you. ;))

and also think of the fact that breathers will get oil all over the engine bay when they do work...

catch cans > breathers.

Not only are you sharper than the average old fart of 22 but you've got this PCV thing down pretty good. A few things for those still pondering:

*edit*..Other than to say shaeff is a sharp guy, based on NashMan's post below I think I'll just go ahead and delete everything I wrote ;)

Well I was thinking what if you put the catch can on the side of the inside fenderwell below the stock air filter?
Its farther down so it catches more oil due to gravity and theres less lines over the place and you wouldnt need to change to the NA PCV lines
Its also in front of the engine so the heat is considerably less.
I havent really looked down there so I dont know how much room there is but Im guessing theres enough for a small CC

you have to put the catch can in an upright position otherwise it is useless. there is not really alot of room in front of the intake filter.

i just did mine too, i put it near the alternator on the cold side near the front of the engine.... (i also relocated my battery to the rear hatch). Of course there's a lot of hose in there, but it's the most functional. i also used huge hose too (-10an) for maximum vacuum because i read some old posts where others had installed thin hose and it caused their cars to smoke like crazy.

anyhow i'll take some pics of it soon, my car is in the shop now (working on the A/C system) but i'll have it back in the next day or two.

shaeff edit- i didn't want to bump a super old thread, so i'll answer your question in your post-

yes, that plug on the bottom is to drain it, but i like to remove the whole top and clean it out really well. when water condenses and mixes with oil, it makes a nasty mess, so i use brake cleaner to fully remove all the residue from the can. :)
