Oil burning during winter storage

A little background:

Last spring I had a new HKS MHG and valve stems seals installed. After this I had no oil burning issues. Until now...:3d_frown:

I recently started the car to let it warm up while in storage. When I started the car there was a small cloud of blue smoke. This looked identical to when I had leaking valve stems. Is it possible for the stem seals to need replacing after one summer of driving?

My other thought is that it is my turbo. At the same time as the HG and valve stem seals, I replaced the original turbo with a lower mileage CT26 from a member on this board. This turbo wasn't rebuilt but it had very little shaft play and no chipped fins. Would the turbo cause oil burning issues like what I have described? The only time I noticed oil burning was right before I stored the car. I had driven for many hours on the highway at regular speeds until it became rush hour. In the stop and go traffic I noticed that my car would occasionally leave a small cloud of smoke.

I sure hope it is the turbo because that would make it much easier to justify the upgrade. If not, oh well, those are the breaks.

Thanks

It could very well be the turbo. Did u notice any weaker acceleration or any other sort of problems regarding turbo? Take accordion hose out and look again for a shaft play. And also take one of IC pipes and look if there's more oil then usual ;)

When you get some free time, perform a compression and leakdown test. The results may give you some needed info.

well maybe the stems were installed incorrectly (yes it is possible). Unless there is blue smoke under acceleration then i will say valve stems. Mine are going out right now...

It's not the turbo, when she goes, it will blow white smoke not blue. From what I heard about turbo cars and storing them, is to start them more often than n/a cars and was told by my mechanic that it is common of turbo cars to blow blue smoke after sitting for a bit. Mine did after 2 weeks of no running, however it was gone in a matter of seconds. As noted earlier, if it only does it for a brief period of time after startup, who really cares.

The most recent time I had the IC pipes off was to install a lower hard pipe. There was some oil in the but not more than usual.

I did not notice any loss of power after it started smoking. Actually, it was running as good as it has ever run.

The reason I am worried about burning oil is that it can elude to more serious problems with the car. Since it is my daily driver I like to catch and fix things before they break and leave me stranded. Not to mention that it looks like shit when I start my car and it creates a big cloud of smoke.

Cryoslash: I'm pretty sure they were installed correctly. Do you know Orville? A member of the Toronto club. He was the one who did the work on my car. If you don't know him, he is a Toyota tech that works on Supra's in his spare time. I trust that he knows what he is doing. Also, I saw oil burning in stop and go traffic as well. It should be noted that once or twice I let the traffic get out in front of...just so I could boost a little bit:biglaugh:

I really don't know what it is but Im trying to budget in enough money to fix whatever is wrong in the spring.

Orville installed them huh? Take it back! :icon_razz
lol seriously though all points leads to your turbo now... either that or piston rings... Get a compression check done and go from there.

Ya I think I will be doing a compression check as soon as the thermometer gets back into positive numbers. If it turns out to be the turbo, I'm buying some new flexible oil lines. I've done it twice the hard way, there will not be a third.
