Noisy Walbro....Should I be worried???

What's going guys? I've finally gotten my car all together. She's running well. I'm only boosting 6 psi on the Frank 5 20g until I got a better tune and break in my motor a bit more. She pulls like a bat out of hell though. Unfortunately, my Walbro fuel pump just started getting really loud. I've only put 50 miles or so on it and I also did the 12V mod. My question is, should I be alarmed? Is it on its way out? I haven't noticed running any leaner, but the noise is starting to worry me. Any advice, or thoughts are greatly appreciated.

tissimo and i's walbro's whined straight out the box. especially with the 12V mod. i think you just notice it more now because you dont have to go WOT to get it to kick up to 12V. i say you are fine.

Been doing some Dynamating... get some Dynamat and take care of all that extra noise coming in from the hatch panels.

I've heard the Walboro whine complaint for many years....

how is the fuel level of your tank? Once, mine was low and the pump SCREAMED (the car ran like shit too...perhaps it was sucking some air). Filled it up and no more issues.

probibly typical. they whine almost as loud as a 96-2000 chevy GMC truck fuel pump.

Maybe it's the China knockoff Walbros? They look identical to the real deal, they are even engraved with walbro on the pump itself, along with the corresponding part number...

The one in my GLHS wasn't particularly noisy, 255lph unit. I have heard other peoples that whined pretty loud though. I think it varies, some are quiet, other are noisy. Not sure why. I'd say you're probably fine.

mine was nice and quiet when I first got it. After about a year, it became noisy as hell. It has been in the car screaming its head off for 3years now with no problems except driving me crazy once in a while. You should be fine.

In that link this company clearly shows that they contacted this china company to reproduce the fuel pumps for them and sent them quiet a few (no know quantity, but based on their wording, it sounds like a lot of fuel pumps). Then they blatantly have them engrave the walbro name on them along with the corresponding part number. Then they have the gall to sell fuel pumps too, stating that you can't tell the difference by just looking at the fuel pumps, so play it safe and buy from us type of attitude, even though they have clearly showed they have access to the fakes. So what's keeping them from selling the fake shit as the real deal???

Buy from the real company, or from an authorized seller of the product people.

I've read threads and posts about people's Walbro's dying on them. Did they just buy imitation pumps?

I hear good and bad about them... Not sure what's true and what's not but there's enough mixed opinion to make me want to just buy a MKIV pump instead.

Based on what's at their website, it's impossible to tell really, as they are identical in every way visually to the real thing, they even have "made in USA" engraved on them :3d_frown:.

The only sure way to tell would be to test them to see how much the flow at a specific voltage level compared to Walbro's statistics. You never know, they may even be up to the task, but how long would they last? Hearing from people that a Walbro fuel pump is acting strangely after having it installed for a realtively short amount of time leads to believe that the pump is possibly a fake. That's why I'd personally buy from an authorized vendor.

Don't cheap out on your fuel system people. That is one of the biggest fuck ups you could do to your car.
