I was on my way to work and the car was driving fine boosted fine etc. Drove back home and let the car idle like i usually do. Then i drove to my friends house and the car wasn't boosting at all... Searched with no luck of anything.

I drove back an fourth on the highway again, after i got out and i get this whining noise. The car idles fine and it feels like a regular N/A it's wierd. When i floor it i get a whining noise sound like its comming from down under the car. No vibrations or stalling. The car doesn't build any boost till about maybe 4k rpm... I'm really confused on what happened.

Any suggestions on where to start looking? If the turbos blown wouldn't it idle wierd or idle at all? I'm stumped....:1zhelp:

Things i have checked already. The BOV and the vaccum lines going to the boost controller (its a Manual one).

Only things im using are a boost controller turned all the way down, HKS SSQV and a W58.

Help! and thanks!

The turbo has no effect on idling, so yes, it sounds like a blown turbo to me. Stop driving it until you get it rebuilt or replaced.

Yea i wasn't sure if it would affect idle..
I was afraid someone would say that. I'm going to pull the accordian hose to see if it's blown.

Time to find a replacement....

You could hook up the AFM directly to the throttle body, bypassing the turbo completely, and it would idle, and run fine, just no boost. Sorry to hear about the untimely demise of your turbo.

Well a little update... I went back to work (got a ride didn't drive the supra) and when i got back about 10 min ago, i turned it on and revved it up a bit. And the whinin noise seems to come from my bov. So i'm hoping that thats the only problem here. Tomorrow morning ill take apart that accordian hose and check the turbo.

Oh, and i forgot to mention that i have no smoke comming out of the exhaust...

I'm going to put the stock bypass valve back on and see if it works.

You sure you're not confusing a whine with a whistle?

To me it sounds like a whine. Kind of like a supercharger if you will but obviously not as loud. If i can't figure out if it's the turbo or the bov i'll end up posting a vid. But for now i really can't do much its dark to do anything.

(crossing my fingers is just the bov)

Well i found a big ass light from my dads shed and went to take the accordian hose out (I can't sleep thinkin i have a bad turbo:biglaugh:) but anyways... I checked the impeller wheel and it spins freely. So i'm assuming the turbo is still good? It has little shaft play like it used to when my brother and I did the swap.

I'm going to wait until tomorrow morning to throw in the bosch bov i have and see if that changes anything. I'm also taking that boost controller out and putting it back to stock see if that changes anything.

are there wear marks on the compressor housing around the compressor wheel?

Nope non at all. Doesn't look like it was grinding.. So i guess i can rule out the turbo?

On a non supra turbo car of mine I had similar symptoms, runs fine but no boost. Turned out I had a collapsed catalytic converter.

Check the nuts to the studs that hold the turbo to the manifold...

Will definitly check that once the sun comes out. I found a clip of what i'm experiencing found on supraforums. I was looking up the "turbo death whine" and this is what i got. I'm going to take them out and buy all new hardware. This engine IS pretty old with high mileage so i wouldn't doubt that what it is. If it doesn't go away i'll come back with an update. Thanks btw and heres the link.

My catylitic converter is about 4 months old. But yea like i said i'm going to replace all that hardware on the exhaust and replace the manifold with a new gasket.

Well went at it and checked the DP to see if it was cracked or anything. Was fine, then went to loosen the nuts on the turbo and they were not even hand tight. :3d_frown: I'm also missing one nut on it too. I also tried taking off the manifold bolts and all those came out easy too like butter. So i'm hoping that's my only problem. For now i just wait till the hardware store opens so i can go grab some new hardware.

So it seems it was a whistle, not a whine? Something like this, it's easier to put a sound clip, or vid up so people can hear what you're talking about.

It will sound like a whine, yeah, I was missing TWO nuts on mine, and replacing the hardwar didn't work.

Had to find the stock supports that were all missing from a previous owner and then they haven't backed off since...

i have the same problem on my supra turbo.
It sounds like the turbo spins extremely fast.
The fist i checked was all pipes between turbo and intake manifold.
Without success i ended up buying a new IC and new pipes.
I also checked the tubro, and there is no signs of it beeing defect.
I dont have any problems with smoke comming out of the exhaust.

Got the new IC today, and will try to install during next week or so. I will post an update after the instalation
