Greetings all!
Have been quietly reading through threads for several months and decided to join in. Just acquired an 86.5 MK3 NA 7MGE with the sport package (Leather, TEMS & 4 pinion LSD). Mechanically in very sound condition. I am actually pretty impressed that (aside from light bulbs and the antenna) everything actually works! The paint and interior are completely trashed as if the car was left in a desert for years. I have also come to appreciate the love these cars have elicited from their owners. Did a basic tune-up and have “enjoyed” a few romps!
First, I sincerely hope there will be no need of Kevlar Body Armor and NOMEX shorts when posting on this forum…and here’s why; The Supra is a ‘donor’. Many of you may be surprised at how popular the 7M engines are with the off-road dirt crowd as I have found many threads with good engine swap information on those sites. Have been researching for about 2 years on the best drive train that I can retro-fit into a 1969 (first year) Triumph TR6 roadster and it is the Supra! I have seen people drop in V8s & V6s, W58 transmissions and Nissan LSDs. There are even a few who have FI & turbo charged the Triumph 2.5 I6 tractor (high torque) engine. Just seemed to me that a complete drive train upgrade was the only worthwhile ‘balanced’ path to take. Some of you may wonder why NA and not turbo…engine bay width is severely limited. The TRs are very narrow.
So, that’s the project and the odd screen name should make some sense now. Also, it should explain the likely ‘bizarre’ issues and questions I will eventually float on these threads.
Now, just think for a minute…2400 pound two seat roadster currently running 90 BHP (I’m at 7000 feet), 4 speed low RPM tractor motor going to a 200+ BHP high singing sweetheart with 5 speeds and an LSD!!! Hmmm…good! :naughty:

And here’s the FIRST question:
I prefer the turbo TCCS system over the NA version. Understanding that the ECU mapping is different, sensors and actuators are also different. Coil packs versus distributor is the main item attraction. So the question is: Has anyone actually changed (or attempted) the NA TCCS over to the turbo TCCS? I believe it is physically and electronically possible, but the mapping in the turbo ECU may not be very efficient at controlling the NA engine. Thoughts?

First off. Welcome.

Regardless of what you have heard, these cars are tanks. Start screwing with them and that is when parts start breaking ;)

My car bit the dust after 225k miles on a silly mistake on my part....

On your second question.

As long as you transfer all sensors and related components. The engines are nearly the same ;)

I think he is going to try and put the 7m into the Triumph TR6 ;)

It should be a fun car to drive. To bad theres no room for a turbo:( What about a custom manifold?

Hi Figgie
The 7m drivetrain is being transplanted into the TR6. I have read many threads on upgrading NA to turbo and swapping the ecu. My query was going the other way. Will the turbo electrics run on the NA efficiently?
Would rather run the NA on the turbo CPS and coil packs than the original distributor.

Hi 92nsx
Dang! 170 club!
I presume you think a custom exhaust manifold might do the trick. Think it might too. As you move towards the firewall, away from the inner fenders, there is a lot more space.
So my thoughts are to start with the NA and all the other fitment. Then, after my hands heal and the wallet recovers...try NA-T. ;)
