Hey all, I've lurked a lot of Toyota sites for a while now, thought I'd finally introduce myself and get in on some of the posts.
I'm normally a Nissan/Datsun guy, but lived in Japan for 5 years and after my last visit became a big fan of Toyota once I saw the goods they had been keeping from North America for themselves :3d_frown:
So, last year I bought a 1990 Toyota Cressida from Grip Industries with a 1JZ/auto very nicely installed and it has been my on/off daily driver ever since. I've become a huge fan of the JZ engine and Toyotas as a result and I really fell in love with mine!
So far it's fairly mild, but I plan to do a lot more with it later. Stuff done to it is as follows:
Mark II 1JZGTE non-TRC/auto/stock twins
Kouki Mark II front end conversion
3" dp and exhaust
Greddy Type M FMIC
Greddy BCC
Makeman intake
Espilir Springs/KONI Sport struts
Mark III helical LSD
Cusco front/rear strut bars
17" IS300 wheels (graphite 5 stars)
Some off brand Japanese steering wheel/hub kit
I have a R154, Mark III clutch/driveshaft setup, and Mine's ECU ready and waiting to go in and hopefully sometime within the next few months I can swap it all over and have a lot more fun with it. My goal is to throw on a GT35R with a nasty/noisy external wastegate, 550cc injectors, and SAFC. I know I could do it just as easily and cheaper with a journal bearing T04, but I really like having a dual ball bearing/GT setup. Then maybe later add some cams and head work, more suspension work with some adjustable coilovers and such, and I'd love to rock a BN Sports or really any kind of body kit. It's been really hard to find any Mark II parts, so mechanically I've got to try to get by with JZA70/Mark III parts since they're almost identical underneath, and then jump on any opportunity to get Mark II/Cressida specific stuff whenever it pops up (suspension, exterior, interior, etc).
Anyways, I've tried to learn as much as I can about the 1JZ/2JZ's and how to tune/upgrade them wherever they need it most. I'd like to get 400-500 rwhp and still have a daily driver car that I can take on long trips if I want to. From all I've seen it's pretty easy to get that kind of power out of these and still have a very streetable setup so long as I'm not always tearing into it.
The car is quite the sleeper and of course the only one like it in my town. Before I bought it, the guys at Grip Industries ran low 13's in the quarter with it turning up the boost a little and throwing on some slicks. Without those mods it's done consistent 14.0's by me, I'd just like it to be a bit more aggressive and sleeperish. I can't post pics right now because I'm deployed to Iraq and they block all that stuff, but I can/will when I get home in October.
My wife loves this car too, but she broke it as soon as I left for this dung hole. The alternator crapped out and she got a new one put on, but after that I guess it was still bucking around and misfiring under partial throttle, so she hasn't driven it in over a month now, it's just sitting. I've tried to figure out what it could be online, but it's hard to do when I'm not physically there to check/test it out, so when I get home I get to work on it and try to diagnose/fix the problem. I'm thinking maybe the main alternator wire might be corroded or loose, so I'll check all that out first, maybe the guy who worked on it didn't do a great job putting the alternator in. Then I'll go ahead and throw in some new plugs and O2 sensor, and see if that clears the problem up or not. If that still doesn't do it, then I'll be poking and prodding in here looking for help to figure out what it is. Once I figure it out, we'll probably only be driving it for a couple weeks before I do the 5 speed swap, but I've got to fix it first so we have a car to drive.
Besides that, I'm a big car nut, I've got a very modified SR20/240SX convertible, a 1972 SR20/Datsun 1200, a 69 Buick, and my wife has a 240SX hatchback. Oh and I have to say my buddy Chris also helped get me into Toyotas too, except he just sold his beautiful 1.5JZ Mark III and now drives a Cobra  so I'm out on my own again. Anyways, glad to be part of your forum!
