I am in the process of swapping in a 7mgte into my 88 4runner. The engine is bolt in and the gaslines, wiring, and radiator are roughed in. Now I want to take out the engine and clean up the engine bay, wiring and plumbing. With the engine out, I want replace all the seals and the headgasket.

My question is what kind of oem headgasket and what kind of headboltkit or stud kit should I use?

I want to keep the engine fairly stock other than a 3" exhaust and the large intercooler that I have from a volvo.

I was thinking of a fel-pro had gasket;but, I would really like to here yalls opinion or advice.

thanks

If youre just wanting to stick to stock, the felpro will work just fine.

DO NOT USE THE STOCK HEAD BOLT.

Buy a set of arp bolt or stud kit.

If you're going aftermarket, theres tons of info out there.

MFGs include Commetic, HKS, and many others.

get a COMETIC. it's the best metal headgasket on the market, as far as i'm concerned. it'll hold flawlessly so long as you do the prep work correctly (have the head and block lapped), and fasten it down with some ARP head STUDS to 90ft lbs.

that's what iv'e got, and i beat the poo out of my car. (read: heavy foot) no problems thus far.

by the way, that's a SICK 4 runner! i wanna do a 7mgte swap into my '94 toyota 4x4 one day. ... sigh...

I might be doing a HG on our '90T soon. So I've been thinking about which way to go. We're putting a T4 CT26, and some other mods. are the head studs really the way to go? or should I just get some ARP bolts? I have a HKS MHG with ARP stud kit on my 5M.. but that's a track car.

How do you prep the block w/out removing the engine? Or can you just prep the head and get away with not preping the block? b/c we don't have any HG problems, I was thinking just of doing it later on for performance insurance.

supra5mgte. arp's website had some usefull info on why studs are better, something about how there is less twisting force into the head for more accurate torque measurments, and also how the stud spreads the load more evenly into the head as compared to bolts.., but i cant explain it better....:dunno:
