fremont, Oh
I just bought a fix up 89 supra targa top with a 7mGE motor with a newly rebuild head for 650. Its white with blue interior with the minor rust spots but my stepdad owns a car restoration company and he said he will spray it for me for free obviously I got to prep it first. Now for the engine it has a 7mGE motor in it with a supposly rebuild head after a HGB but I probably will strip it down again just to make sure everything was done properly plus I got to put back alot of parts and probably get new wiring and hoses or I might just start with a 2JZ swap havent completly decided yet. One of the rear calipers are stuck too so im gonna have to work on that also and probably replace the exhaust on it. So overall I got a lot of work ahead of me haha but the outcome will be worth it. Thought id say hey because ill be on here asking questions and researching alot more so any advice or help will be greatly appreciated.

Congratulations! Now listen to that little voice in your head that is screaming at the top of his lungs..."2J SWAP!!!" Its well worth it in any variety, GE, GE-T, or GTE. yes I am biased :D just got done the GE-T swap myself. Even on a crap tuned MAFT Pro, the thing is a beast!!!

Good luck with the project!

If you're going GE-T or even staying GE, then yes; I have lots of advice :naughty: I have most of it recorded in my build thread, and what I don't have listed, I can either tell you, or you can find the stickies posted under "other engine tech"

If you are looking at having to rebuild the 7M anyway, dropping a 2J GE is not much more complicated. You can run the 2J off of the 7M electronics, so no real wiring to worry about. Plus most 2J GE's are listing up at around $250-$500 depending on year and condition. Just stay away from VVTi motors. Bottom ends are not as strong, plus using 7M electronics on it will render the VVTi useless anyways.

I thought the ge has weaker internals than the gte? And why does the vvti have a weaker bottom end? Im gonna redo all the wiring and hoses anyways the engine bay needs serious cleaning up on my car.

Found mine on Craigslist for $400 with harness. Came from a 95 SC300. That was the full motor with all accessories, plus the harness. And yes, GTE's bring their wieght in gold. That motor is put into so many different vehicles as "hybrid" swaps it's not even funny. Due to the demand for the GTE, prices are usually a higher.

But if you're already looking to go turbo, you could do a stand-alone on the 2J GE, or get everything from a 7MGTE and start there, or you could get a piggy back to mate onto the 7MGE electronics (not a fan of distributors tho...)

My setup up is the simplest of swaps - I literally replaced the 7M block and head with that of a 2JGE. Everything else electronis and turbo wise is still 7M, including the CT26 and 440's. I did have to fabricate an exhaust mani though, as none exist for using the CT on the 2J; at least I couldn't find any.

Hit up Craigslist, local junkyards, ebay (occasionally) and Lexus forums. The guys on the lexus forums are all swapping in GTE's and basically throwing away the GE.

Here is the link to the build thread. Haven't updated it in a while as most of whats being done now is all tuning related and just putting the little stuff back together.

Yes and no - I'm drawing a blank right now, but I'll see if I can find all the notes relating to internal component material compositions. The GE has a higher compression ratio than the GTE. That is the main issue most people are worried about. There are documented 2J's running >500hp on stock internals. The compression ratio issue is solved my running an aftermarket gasket from titan or cometic or something like that. I personally went with the stock GTE head gasket. IIRC it puts the CR at about 9:1 or 9.1:1 While it's a bit high compared to most factory turbo cars (7MGTE is 8.4:1) it does allow for a bit more off boost power. Only thing to be mindful of is your tune. Pre-ignition (knock) is more prone to happen at this CR than at the 8.4:1 But spending the extra time to get the tune right will not only ensure no pre-ignition issues, plus having a proper tune is the key to making power anyway.... :D

Also - VVTi uses smaller width rods in the bottom end. Again, I'm going off of memory from research done almost a year ago. I could be wrong, but the VVTi bottom end is the weakest of all 2J's. Better off to stay away.

Then, go straight for the big dog, GTE, big single, sewer pipes for fuel lines and the turbo from some massive peice of construction equipment :D lol
