So I started my quest by purchasing a completely stock '88 N/A supra. Mostly for daily driving. Soon after I discovered some rust and was considering selling the car but the day I decided I had over reved the motor and it developed a knocking sound. So thanks to all the excellent information on this site I have now swapped in a 7MGTE from a parts car I bought. Unfortunately due to the information I was given when purchasing the car I was lead to believe the motor had been completely rebuilt about 10000km ago and the head gasket had just been changed. However the car had not run since the gasket was changed as the guy was going to put it in a tacoma but ran out of money. So I now need to go buy a socket tomorrow to remove the nuts off the arp studs as I don't seem to have the correct one. I should have checked when it was on the floor(FFFF) LOL. learn the hard way or don't learn at all! Anyway he must have read the TSRM wrong because when the #1 piston was TDC he had the cam gears at about 1 o'clock and when I revved it up a bit, I let the white smoke out. Can't wait to get it running again. Rust has also been fixed in the process. Thanks everyone and I look forward to posting good question and helping find solutions.
