Just recieved a new 7mgte JDM engine purchased from Sunrise motors on
ebay. All looks very good. Paid $750 (engine came withe turbo, all sensors, Alternator, water pump, coil cover everything) it is susposed to have 45K miles on it of course no way to tell for sure, however it is very clean for used. I was going to go ahead and replace the
head gasket and use ARP studs just to prevent future headaches and drop it in.
Is this a good idea or would you just stick it in and go for it.
Also this engine seems to be a later yr. model than my orig. 87 so the intake
manifold seem slightly different as well as the ISC unit (idle speed cont.) Will any of these differences make a difference in the swap out?
Your thoughts or comments on this are appreciated.

get the MHG and ARP Head bolts. Rule number one man! And the 45k miles can't be certain but you can look up the wvin of the car they got it from and get it checked i believe.

YES!! Be sure to replace the head gasket and the bolts!!!! Those will be the biggest problems to deal with!!! Hell, you might as well put some spacers on the turbo acuator while it's out. If the intake is different than the US version,i'm guessing that it is because the one you bought from Japan does not have any of the smog equipment that the US requires. I thimk

Thanks for the comments, yes I now have a ARP head stud set to use with
this engine. I also will replace ALL the hoses and soft stuff under the hood.
Not planning massive power something modest perhaps 300-350 rwhp or
so and just drive it. But I want it to be reliable.

300rwhp is very easy to get Intake, Downpipe, Catback, MBC and maybe a FMIC and hard pipes just to make sure. Do some research dude there are so many cars that are making 300+rwhp on the stock turbo, intercooler and fuel, as far as reliability, you'll have a head start if you do a MHG now, and if you can change oil and do basic maintenance you will have a RELIABLE 300hp car. While the motor is out you might want to check the oil pan, maybe take it off and re-FIPG the sealing surfaces. Also if you are looking at 350rwhp you might want to upgrade the clutch. A stock disc with an ACT pressure plate will serve you well at 350rwhp. Good luck!

Also Cryoslash, 250 is just about stock, put a downpipe, cat back and one washer in the WG and viola'!

Ehhh... I hope you didn't get a motor with blown bearings.. rod knock :(

I could never get the balls to buy a used motor that I haven't personally used or seen used. (Unless I wanted a shit motor just to use as a short block to rebuild..)

Good luck!

if you get a motor like that, that (presumably) has no BHG... do you have to get any machine work done to the head, or can you just slap the MHG on there?

machine the head and lap the block, just to be sure. I got away with hand lapping the block in tthe engine bay, but if its out then go ahead and take it to the machine shop. the head and block (doubtful but possible) could still have warped without a BHG.

ok cool... i'm looking to do this soon, as my engine is getting up there, and i'd rather have the car down for 3-4 days when i want it to be down, swapping the engine, rather than when i don't with a BHG
