One problem with owning a 89 Supra N/A that has over 200K, is that there is never an end to having to fix/replace things! :aigo:
My saga started about three years ago now when I took ownership of said car from my son, knowing I needed to replace the engine. :nono:
That only took about 9 mounths to get that done (JDM replacement), then another year (no really big hurry) to work out the details why it wasn't drivable...Transmission had to be replaced, then the radiator, water pump, incorrect water pipe installed (another son actually did the engine swap for me) and he left the water pipe on the JDM engine, which the left side was sealed at the factory, and the right side was plugged, so no water going into the heater core.
My son that I bought the car wanted it back after I got it running again and promptly drove it about 35 miles and called and said it wouldn't idle. I go and get it and drive it home for him. I told him to remove the air intake and see if there is anything amiss. He doesn't see anything wrong. So he drives it down to a local Toyota specialist and they say the fuel pump needs to be replaced! And at a cost of $700, I say no way! He decides he doesn't want the car back after all, so it sits in my driveway for three months with me going out and starting it up once in a while just to keep the battery charged.
One time while running it I get the urge to remove the air intake tube only to discover a big hole melted in the big air deflector between the air cleaner and the engine intake. I duct taped it and the silly thing purs like a kitten!
But now, it won't shift out of first gear. I replace that little speedo cable connector at the tranny and it starts working, but breaks within a short time! :icon_mad: We replace all of the speedo cables, and starts working again, but breaks again after a few miles! I replace the speedo and it starts working again! :icon_bigg
Once I got all of that squared away and started driving it, I fould that the head gasket was bad! ::bhg::
So last November, just before starting a new job, I took a week and replaced the head gasket. Running great, until a few months ago the power steering started leaking. A mechanic friend of mine told me the high pressure line had a hole in it. And since the rack and pinion had been leaking since we originally bought the car for my son, I decide to replace the rack and pinion and the high pressure side (did it myself). Got it all back together and started it up only to discover the low side had the hole in the line, not the high side! :nono:
Bought some transmission line, took 15 minutes to replace that and it all better now. Except I strained my neck when replacing the rack and pinion, that now I've had neck and back pains for the last month! :rant2:
As I drove it home one night and stopped for gas, the seat belt wouldn't release and the gas door wouldn't open! I had to slip out of the belt and break the door open! :icon_mad:
But it seams to be running great now! ::w00t::
My boys keep telling me I need to get rid of it, but I say no way, I like it too much and how it is running now, I don't see any reason to get rid of it....but that is subject to change at anytime, depending on what goes bad next!
Next big project PLANNED, will be to replace the shocks all the way around. :evil2:
