Yeah, doesn't mean anything, just happy I got it (spent 4 hours studying)

I've been working on computers for about 18 years now. When all this testing garbage came out, I refused to take any of it - I refuse to take a test just to have a piece of paper than says I know something. Besides, I've worked with WAY too many damn people that think they know something because they took a test. :3d_frown:

Anyway, my boss-man here @ SFCC had a couple extra vouchers for Network+ and A+ certification (CompTIA) so he gave me one of each. I just finished the Network+, and in 2 weeks, will take the A+

I still won't pay to take the tests, but if they are free, who am I to complain? :D

free is free!

just like free food! I don't care for subs to much but when it is free. I am gobbling them up! :)

BTW I am like you. 15+ years in this business. Know Microsoft products inside and out. I am just a low MCP. Not wasting my money on the MCSE nonesense.

Nice man :) I got mine for free as well. An instructor offered free coupons for the class, and also offered an A in the course if the student passed the certification.

I got an A that quarter :)

Hehe... Yeah, I'll take a $118 voucher any day. Next is the A+ essentials, then the IT Technician. Then I'm going to see if I can get a free Linux+ voucher, then a Security+ voucher. After that I'll probably go MCSE.

It'll look really good on a resume, at least. :)

Kai, having just taken the test, I had to laugh. 50 windows 98 computers talking to a Novell 3.x server? Time for an upgrade, guys. 4mbs Token Ring setup? Man, get some CAT6 cable and $500 in NICs, and let's get a network that actually moves.

I'm VERY surprised they didn't have more with Fiber Optic systems. Oh well!

Fiber is not to prevelant in the workstation side.

Enterprise/Data warehousing is all together a different beast :)

Figgie, T1 is usually run via FO, in my experience. Hell, our backbone @ SFCC is 10 gigabit fiber, as well ;)

It just surprised me there was so much WINS and Token Ring on the test.

I mean, WINS. Who the hell uses WINS anymore? Or NetBIOS lookup any more?

Token Ring? Jesus....

Last thing i saw that was that old, was a network of RM Nimbus 186's connected over 10 Base2 Coax....386 DX 33 server and a 400mb SCSI drive for the whole school....Windows 3.0 loaded onto 1mb memory machines from a central server - oy, talk about SLOW!

EXACTLY! Why on earth would anyone possibly use something so slow? We routinely throw away PIII 500Mhz and below systems. Complete systems at that! There is no excuse to still be using a physical bus topology, or a Token Ring network, either.

FDDI is the only exception I can think of with a ring topology, due to having redundancy in the 2 rings.

Congrats on passing the tests. Pretty much common sense stuff that every techie SHOULD already know. But a piece of paper does not make one an expert. There's alot of paper MCSE's, CNE's, A+'s, and CCNA's out there. Luckily, I don't have to chase certifications anymore. All my clients care about is getting their damn computer/network fixed, haha. But I guess if I had to put out resumes in the corporate world I would have to get new certs to just get noticed.

The certification programs are quite the money-maker for the companies that provide them though. I've heard of high schools offering MCSE and CCNA courses. Lucky kids! All we had were TRaSh-80's and Apple IIe's.

Just took the A+ Essentials (1st part of the A+ cert program) Took 25 minutes - 820/900. With no studying at all.

Boss man is going to spring for the IT Technician part of the program, as well. Thinking of snagging Linux+ if I can swing it, while I'm at it :D
