I have an 86 Supra Targa Automatic. I love the car and it has been a project since I got the car in a trade deal. The car has the turbo on it and even though I am a stick transmission type of guy, the car is fun to drive. Does anyone have an idea why the car is spitting and sputtering like its a fuel problem. I have heard check injectors, Rotor and cap, and replace plugs and wires. The plug wires look brand new... I put a can of Sea Foam in it, and that didnt really help much. The car has 118,000 on it or so and I wonder if anyone else has ideas for me to check. I have another parts car minus the engine for body parts... but want to get the engine running correctly. My guess is an injector, or electical in nature. Any suggestions. Someone told me to check the coil packs... Also, there is a bolt on the top of the roof that seems to be stripped out. Any suggestions on fixing that so the top doesnt rattle? Thanks for the advice in advance...I love the car... I cant imagine how she would run tuned all up... Its like a lion in a box that wants to be let out...Thanks...Goldpeak1

Is everything stock other than turbo? It is a 7mge with a turbo right? Do you have any type of piggyback tuning? Have you checked for codes? Is the timing right?
And don't seafoam again it's a waste of money

Btw it either has distributor or coilpacks

Can you take a picture of your cap and rotor and post it? Seafoam is a waste of money.

Go into diagnostic modes and see if you have codes stored. Sputtering doesn't mean much. If any of the three parts to the combustion triangle(air/fuel raito, spark timing, compression) are out of spec, you will sputter.

I suspect we're going to want pics, and possibly some more history here.

First of all, THIS is a 1986 Toyota Supra:

This, on the other hand, is a 1986.5 Toyota Supra:

Neither of these was offered with a turbo from the factory. Toyota didn't release a Turbo until 1987 - which looks pretty much the same on the outside as the second picture, above, but has some significant differences. For instance, there's no cap and rotor, as it uses a cam position sensor instead of a distributor. It also has three separate coilpacks, controlled by the ECU through an ignitor, whereas the naturally aspirated system is more conventional.

If you really have one with a turbo / distributor, you've been handed someone else's upgrade project.

Since we are going to nitpick, the 7MGE on the Supra and Cressida does have a cam position sensor. It just has a secondary ignition system attached to it.

Also, that is a nice looking 86.

Is the sputtering ocurring on and off boost or on-boost only? is the fuel level lower than a quarter tank when it happens or does it do it at any level? My '91 has been sputtering and lacking power on-boost when the fuel level is lower than a quarter tank. checked the fuel pressure today according toTSRM and found it to be low. New fuel filter in place leaves a weak pump to blame. Check yours out and see if you get the same thing.
