well, today while changing wheels i ripped off 3, count them 3 lugs. 2 on my driverside rear, and 1 on my passenger front. dunno what the hell happened, but instead of unscrewing the lugnuts, i snapped the bolts. im a pretty big dude, and am not sure how this happened, but i have never ripped lugs off a car befor even putting everything i had into it. shit happens...

i have allready talked to a few people and they told me i could just replace the bolts i destroyed. pull the wheel off and smack them out the back side is what i was told. there seems to be something missing here, i took a quick look behind the wheel and it didnt look like i could do, it looked like there were some pieces in the way. has anyone done this? i was going to leave on a 1200 mile trip tonight, but decided to put it off till i was sure my wheels werent gonna fall off at 90mph. i was also told this is a half hour job per wheel, but i have never done this before, just replaced the whole hub.

anyway, thanks for any help you guys can give me.

Im not positive on the supra but on most cars you can just pull the hub/disk off of the car and then you should be able to see the backs of the studs. Then you can smack them out with a hammer or a press. Then put the new ones in hammer it a little then the lug should pull it the rest of the way in...

yeah on my friends rx-7 all you gotta do is pull the rotor and caliper off and then just pound them out and beat the new one in. i dunno about diving on three lugs in the back rear. 4 you are ok. getting a hole new hub would be kinda a waste. check the online tsrm and see what it has to say.

I was thinking about replacing mine with ARPs this summer anyways. 20 yo studs just make me a little nervous, especially with how many times wheels go on and off a car.

well, i ripped another 2 off, im so glad i bougt 2 extra..... im about to go back to the store and tell them i need another 15 so i can replace them all.

i cant get the rear rotor off for the life of me. i spent a few hours messing with it. i have the orginal trsm, and it said nothing about removing the center nut. i took off the caliper, but that rotor wouldnt budge. i think its rusted on, but id like to know if anyone here has pulled the rear rotor.

the front was very easy. took of the wheel, took off the caliper, then the rotor, then smacked the old ones out. it took me a few minutes to get the new studs in there, they were just a little big to get in the space provided. i just put it in and lined it up the best i could then rotated the hub and it went in.

Since the rear rotor has a drum inside it, you will need to either back down the shoe tension via the starwheel that can be accessed through the little hole in the drum, or get a rubber mallet and start hitting the rotor from the backside of it.
Hit it a couple times, then rotate the hub, hit, rotate, hit, rotate, it should come off, usually they just need a little persuasion.
Spray a little PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench before you start hitting it, though. Spray it where the hub protrudes out from the center of the rotor and let it sit for a while.

LOL!!! i did all that!

i made sure the ebrake was off, then backed the shoe tension way down, then sprayed pb blaster on the studs to try and get some of it between the drum and rotor, also around sprayed the center. smacked it for a while with a hammer, sprayed it some more, smacked it some more, then tried using something rubber and smacking the back of the rotor to get it off.

the only thing i didnt do is spray the inside of that center hole, where the nut is. i wasnt sure where the bearing were located and didnt wanna screw up the grease.

i talked to a few people and was told about 15 different things, one person even told me things were welded together down there. "um, thats not what my genuine toyota manual says, it just says take off the wheel and caliper and pull. and if that doesnt work then adjust the ebrake and pull some more. theres nothing about welding in there..." another told me i needed special tools, and another said i needed special training. i figured even though im not a mechanic and have never even worked on a supra before that i was on the right track. im about to pull the wheel off the other side and see how it works, but im afraid ill snap another dozen lugs....

I come from a land down under
Sounds like someone has gone berserk with a rattle gun in your cars past!

The Tire place always looks at me like I'm a nut when I pull out the torque wrench to put the wheels back on!

^lol, Ian. Some people just don't know what it is to truly be into cars!

ninja: I had to give mine a fuggin beating to end all beatings. My rotors were nearly unusable when I was done.... I put some good dents in the rotor faces...

lol supra90turbo, i can definatly belive that. i had a 5lb mini sledge there too, i was tempted to order new rotors and beat that one off. but i wasnt sure if i missed something or not. i would feel like a complete retard if i smashed that to hell for no reason. that and i would have to drive it home.

i made it the 7 mile trip home with only 2 lugs on my driverside rear wheel....scared the hell out of me. in the morning im going to take it to the shop around the corner and ask them to rip the rotor off. just pull the rotor and ill do the rest.

just making sure about this, i DO NOT need to undo that center nut to get the rotor off?

What about 36 Year old like on my chevelle?

Those I would replace for sure. But most muscle cars get newer studs when the rear axles are swapped out(at least those that I've seen being restored/built).
I know they're strong from the factory, but as much torque as those bolts see it's only a matter of time.
