A while back I bought a 240SX project for my son's first car. I got a great body/interior and two good low mileage motors....a KA24 and a FWD SR20de. I want to use the SR20 as RWD, but the manifold will have to be changed to do so. My question is, will the manifolds from the KA be interchangeable? I believe a lot of the stuff is. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Also, is there anything else that I will need to swap out to make the SR useable, aside from the intake related parts?

I will probably be needing a lot more advise as I go along slowly with this car.Plans are to just make a daily driver out of the car with the SR and auto transmission. This will give him a platform to build onto in the future.

First question...Do you have a really heavy door that needs to stay open? If you do the the SR is the perfect choice for that. As far as the SR and KA being interchangable....I didn't know anything could be used on both motors. I now they sell adapter plates and such for KA's using SR clutch's/flywheel's. A good place to read up on both KA's and SR's is KA-T.org. They are of course more KA based cuz it is a far superior motor but they have plenty of members that have SR's and tons of SR knowledge.

SR20de's have less hp than a dual cam KA24. So I don't see why you just wouldnt swap a KA24DE into it. And for more info on any swap in a 240sx id just find a drift forum. Alot of people that drift know pretty much everything on those cars. www.Driftcoalition.com is one of the ones local to me and they have lots of members that would offer better advice that me.

It's not worth it to swap in an SR20DE, it's a 2L compared to the 2.4L KA...

there are so many SR20DET's for sale, and so many KA's that have been taken out for the swaps, finding an engine should be no problem at all...

My KA is the dual cam version. I was just under the impression that the SR was the better motor. The SR has so much more value, I could sell it off to build funds for the swap. This is good information, Thanks. I will continue to read advise, as neither of these motors start with 7M.

The problem is that everyone has the impression that SR20's are better. But there is nothing better about that motor than a KA except that KA's don't come turbo'd from Nissan. The SR is an aluminum block the KA is iron. The SR20 turbo has all of 205ish hp to the crank the KA24de has 155 hp to the crank. I do not see why you would pay 3k for a motor with 50 more hp and a hell of lot lets potential. You could put 3k into the KA, run 400ish hp, and run high 11's low 12's all day long or buy a SR for the same money and run 14's.
Oh and what happens if you do blow a KA......you go buy one from some kid or a junkyard for $200.

BTW......jimwolf is your friend for a tune on KA's and I think they do SR's as well.

The SR20 is popular because it comes in everything and has a huge aftermarket. It does have a couple of advantages, namely it's lighter and has a higher redline. That said, it is second only to VTEC as the most over-rated engine ever. It's a rev-happy, torqueless motor with a narrow powerband and an annoying exhaust note. It's perfect for drifting, where the extra revs help keep the motor alive. Aside from that it has nothing to recommend it.

The KA-T, on the other hand, is a great motor. The KA24 make a lot of torque for a four cylinder and the turbo just makes it better. They're easier to get power out of than the SR20 as well. That extra half liter makes a big difference.

They have quickly let me know that the FWD SR20 can not be converted to RWD, so I will be going with the KA24 as advised by the knowledgeable here.

I own a 1990 240SX with an SR20DET swap (RWD version) I just bought my first Toyota and it happens to be a turbo Supra. She is my DD. My 240 is for going FAAAST!! The KA is a great motor and damn near indestructible. I beat the s**t out of mine and she never quit on me. The KA has plenty of torque and if you back that up with an LSD it is great fun. Off the line my KA would take my SR just out of the tq of the motor........of course once the turbo in the SR spools it over....... For a first car the KA is plenty. And it still has enough torque to drift competitively. Do the suspension and interior/exterior first then save for either an SR or a turbo set up for the KA. The are pros and cons to both. I have had my 240 for over 5 years now and don't ever plan on selling her. She just got a Silvia front end conversion and is getting ready for paint. If you have any questions or need any help just PM me here or send me an email at abozylinski@yahoo.com. Have fun with your project.
