Hi Everyone,

I've been doing a ton of research related to painting my car over the last few months and now I'm trying to decide on color. Currently my car is original paint, and is the black ruby metallic. I love black but hate how everything defect stands out like a sore thumb. I want to keep the car dark and thought to be different I would paint the car a very dark metallic silver.

So, all I'm looking for are suggestions. If you've seen a nice dark silver on a car, please pass along what car you saw it on I would really appreciate it.

If I can't find a colour I really like I may stick to black and use the color code for Corvette Z06 black.

Thanks guys.

Factory Color. Kinda gray, but might be what you're looking for.:

imo id just repaint orig color and pay for a good paint job.

I want to do it myself because I have trust issues with shops around my area to make a long story short. I've been practicing by painting various parts and I've been able to get excellent results doing it myself. Lots of work and time but I'm in no rush. I do think that the original colour is pretty nice the more I look at it.

Love your car Alec. I saw your car on cardomain before I bought my Supra and your car along with a couple of others made me decide on a MKIII Supra. You have a very nicely done car! What factory colour is that?

Thanks

On another note, I was talking to a guy in a new Nissan GTR at the gas station tonight and his car was dark grey.....very nice colour!!!

To be honest with you, I don't know what the color is called. Maybe someone else can chime in and be of some more assistance. The nice thing about my color is that in bright sunlight, it has a really nice sparkle and metallic silver-gray and in low-light it has a gunmetal look to it. Looks even better in person and doesn't show dirt easily. Look at Nick Stonawski's Supra, he has the same color as me.

Yeah I've seen some pics of Nick's car and it's a nice colour. I may actually try your colour on a spare fender I have and see how it turns out.

Thanks Alec!

What paint system have you messed with? What kind of spray guns do you have? Spraying a complete car is a different ball game that doing small parts. It's the same process only on a much bigger scale. If you're going to lay down metallics you'll want to overlap @ 75%. You'll have to walk the car too. If you try to lay it down panel by panel it will be obvious where you laid more paint down in between each panel. If you tiger stripe it you have to pull back a fog it to try to get it more uniform all over. Then your metallics will tend to stay on top of the paint film which will make the paint a little lighter. When you fog it you can run into die back issues cause you're practically dusting your base coat on to try to even it. Chances are you're going to cut and buff anyway, so that really shouldn't be an issue.

Lay out your clear coats wet. Focus on good atomization, but enough material flowing out. Depending on what gun you use will somewhat dictate what clear would be best to use. There are clears that run thin and thick. There are spray guns that like spraying thin or thick clears. But then again, if you cut and buff there shouldn't be an issue there either.

Good luck and have fun. Post pics of some before and after for us to enjoy.

black>everything else. the dark gray metallic look sick too but you have a black car and there arnt that many of them and unless you do it right and get every nook and cranny when you open the doors/hood/hatch it might look like shit. but gl on what eve you do.

Like I said earlier, I am unsure of what my color code is. All I know is that it's a factory color for 89.

Thanks for all the information guys, this is really helpful. I am going to be picking up some small spray cans of a few different colours and trying them on spare parts just to see how they look. As much as I like the dark silvers I know a colour change is going to be a lot of work. I can stay black and have a much easier time and the car will still look awesome. Once I see a few of the colours in more detail I will make a decision.

The good news is the body of my car is in fantastic condition, no rust and only minor dings and scratches.

Remember, the prep work is the most important part.

darkest silver = black metallic :D

This is actually black with too much metallic in it. They didn't expect it to come out looking a very dark grey. In person in the sunlight it has an extremley dark tint to it. I was working at that custom body as an intern during the finish of that build. I may have sandblasted a couple of parts for that car, but that's about it. Anyhow, here are the pics. In the second pic you can see the difference from the black to the "too much" metallic black on the hood. It's the same black paint only they added the fine metallic flake to the rest of the paint to finish the car. In poor light conditions, and at night, the car looks black. In the sunlight it looks like a very dark grey metallic.
