Need Help with a Machine Shop...

My HG finally blew on my 91 NA, I"m now in the process of taking the head off, what I need to know is once i take it to a machine shop, what am I looking to do? I dont really know the right terms for what I need, I"ve done research but I'm still a bit in the dark, to *Lapping* and etc...

This is going to be my first time working on a HG so i hope to get it done right. Any help would be greatly appreciated.


P.S. Does anyone know of a reputable shop in the Los Angeles/Glendale/Pasadena area? if I can find a shop thats familair with the 7m, then the proces would be more easier on my behalf.

while you have the head off the car, get them to drill and tap the exhaust studs for bigger studs. driftmotion sells a kit if you want to do it yourself.

On an N/A I'd just go with a Felpro HG + ARP studs. I'm running that @ 12-14psi, with no problems on a Turbo

Lapping is just a super-fine grinding, done to polish the finish of the head/block - it creates a lower 'RA' (roughness average) when done properly.

Tell the mechanic you need as little material taken off the block AND head as possible to make both straight. Depending on if you want to use a MHG or not, you'll have to get the RA specs within tolerance. And yes, the stud kit Doriftomotion sells is great (I've got one) and ARP studs are FTW. Don't for get the have new, proper sized rod and main bearings installed because of the BHG or you will be rod knockin soon after .

When I took my head in I just told them to clean it up, resurface it and not to take anymore than .007" off. Well I think thats the number I said. Correct me if thats completely off. I used a Toyota OEM hg.
