my father and i need to separate the 7mgte from the tranny inside the engine bay before we can pull it. does any one know the size, number, and aprox. how long it will take to get to these bolts while its in the car? Any tricks would be helpful too? I searched but all i could find were threads of just yanking the whole drivetrain.

Thanks in advance.

IIRC the bolts that connect the tranny to the block are a 14mm head. You will need a swivel or two and some extensions to get to them. Then the easiest way I have found to disconnect the clutch is thou the access covers. Remove them and then remove the 6 bolts (iirc 12mm head)that connect the pressure plat to the flywheel. Then drop the tranny out. Besides removing the drive shaft, and draining the gear lube from the tranny first.

I am guessing it will take you guys 2 hrs. or so depending how much the top tranny bolts fight you.

Also I know to get to the top bolts norm you remove the motor mount nut (17mm or 19mm head) then remove the bolt holding ther tranny to the car and with a jack, tilt the motor and tranny down to gain access to them.

There is a write up some where maybe another member will chim in and share it with you. I can't find it, lol/

EDIT: or you can always follow the TRSM

Before tilting everything, I'd have someone watch the radiator. It is easy for the fan to cut through it with the weight of the motor and tranny pushing it. Go slow and easy while tilting.

I believe everything else that 92nsx told you is correct. If not, maybe the pressure plate bolts might be 14MM, but I think 12 is correct.

Why? if it were me i would pull the motor and tranny together. way easier.

Because he didnt ask "how do I remove the engine and tranny together" he asked how to remove the tranny, and if there is any tips to do so, last it is him not you, that is why, :biglaugh:

yeah, but if he wanted to save the hour or two it takes to hassle with the tranny then i would call that a tip from experience because i know how much of a pain those upper tranny bolts can be the first time.

but hey. he can do what he wants. so if you do decide to pull just the motor here is a tip. when unbolting the pp. yank the fork out for the throwout bearing after you remove the slave cylinder. now you will see that with a extension you can reach the pp bolts through where the slave cylinder goes in without having to fuck with a rachet in that small area the inspection covers give you.

oh yeah. one more. don't even try to get the top tranny bolts until the trans mount is off. then lower the tranny as low as it will go. you will have tons of room to get them. i like using a 2ft extension with a wobbler. maybe 3ft actually. good luck. :icon_razz

i agree....its much much better to pull the motor with the trans....you will save alot of time and headaches!!!! if your pulling the motor take the trans with it for your own sanity lol..

or you can do it the hard way of removing the starter, using a two foot extension to get to the top bolts of the bell housing....etc

thanks a lot guys and the argueing is unnecessary, my father and I decided that we are going to pull the whole drivetrain. our problem is in the crank case and we didn't want to take the tranny out if we didn't have to, but after i did some more research i found we probably should inspect the tranny while the engine is out anyway. thanks a lot again, i'll keep all this in mind if i ever have to just take out the transmission

Just for future reference, you would have to leave a jack or something under the front of the tranny anyway. The engine is what holds the front of the tranny.

After pulling JUST my tranny to do my clutch, I'm gonna disagree with those saying to pull the engine and tranny.

Tranny jack (cheap as hell at harbor freight), 3' of extensions, an old yoke (put it in in place of the tool used in the TSRM, means you won't loose your gear lube in the tranny), and following the TSRM and it's a very easy job.

No, I didn't loosen the motor mounts or use a jack to tilt the engine as it's not needed...

I also disagree on taking out the transmission with the engine. Too much unnecessary work. Too much fluid line, intercooler piping, exhaust piping and wiring. Maybe because I have small hand.
