check fluid first,

what noise does it make if any.

dont drive it if you dont have fluid or if it starts screaming at you!

:aigo: Fluid is ok....and it does not make any noises, it justs starts on 1 gear and does not change ! It was working fine ! Just stopped at a red light and when it turned green it stayed on 1 gear and did not shift to the next gear and the speedometer gauge stopped working at the same time !!!!:1zhelp:

if thats not it can anyone say rebuild? your speedometer is probably not working cause the cable or sensor is broke. thats what it sounds like what other funny things is it doing?

I believe the tranny uses the speed sensor in the speedometer. No speedo, no speed sensor. Fix that first and your tranny problems will probably disappear.
:naughty: thanks!! I will try that first !!:naughty:

The are two speed sensors...the one in the speedo like JJ mentioned and another on the tranny, drivers side forward of the mount. That's the one you want to check...I had mine fail and got the exact same thing you have.

Thanx jdub. I was shootin' from the hip on that one. I know next to squat about MKIII slushboxes.

Is there any kind of mechanical connection to the tranny from the throttle? Kickdown?
I also seem to recall the TPS on an auto is different. More wipers on the pot or something in order to communicate throttle plate angle to the tranny ecu. Is that right?

The TPS is the same on the auto and manual...it transmits info to the Auto ECU through the Engine ECU...the TPS in combo with the speed sensor on the tranny itself determines shift timing. That's why his tranny is stuck in 1st...the speed sensor can't tell the ECU when to shift. The one in the dash is primarily for the cruise control and ABS...I'm pretty sure it's also a back-up to the one on the tranny. What I'm thinking here is his tranny speed sensor is bad and when his speedo stoped working...well party over. The only thing is he should have an O/D Off light blinking at him indicating a fault code in the tranny ECU.

There is a "kickdown" cable...called a throttle cable in the TRSM. The Auto ECU gets input from the cable and rpm from the Engine ECU...it's used to regulate line pressure and as signal pressure for up/down shifts through the hydraulic control unit. The hydraulic control unit also gets input from the speed sensor.

You lose the speed sensor on the tranny and you got all kind of problems :naughty:

The throttle cable is one of the guess work adjustments when you have your valve body modified (like mine); too high a line pressure and you'll get shift "shock"...too low and your clutch will slip. You're already increasing line pressure by modifying the valve body, so you don't know where you are to achieve a balance. On a modified one, the thing I saw was the shift shock (high line pressure)...took me a while, but I finially got it just about right.

Thanx, all good stuff to know. Jeez, what ever happened to vacuum modulators? Guess they might be a problem on turbos.

I'm pretty sure all this stuff is in my books (including a factory training manual on autos) but I tend to gloss over it. I just looked and the goofy TPS I mentioned is used on some other Yota models.
