Im gathering info on a rebuild for my car.

My needs and goals.
Car is a 88 Turbo Auto

Want to make 400-450hp
Im going to be using the turbo thats already on the car (GReddy TD06H-20G)

Full boost at 3K RPMS

I need the car to be reliable as the car will be driven daily.

My budget im setting myself up at is $2000-$3000

Im just trying to see which is more cost effective rebuild or the dime a dozen 1j swap. Im still leaning towards the 7M (I need a ride in a 1J powered Supra) though just want to see what it will take to reach my goal.

So far all i know is that i need a MHG ill probably use a HKS Stopper Gasket.
What else should i get done or need?

Cams, Pistons, etc?

Thanks

you dont need cams to reach that goal....internals (rods and pistons would just make the block reliable but it is not necessary to make 400 rwhp....there have been a few guys that made well over 400 on the stock block and HG...

This is what I would do, taken from other's builds, and on recommendation of others that know some shit:

-Shotpeen/beam polish the rods (assuming in good condition to begin with)
-Micropolish and straighten the crank (not necessarily in that order :p )
-Block: Deck it, but don't bore it unless it's required (otherwise you'll need new pistons)

I haven't the faintest idea what that would cost... depends on the shop I guess? If your cylinder bores are within tolerance, you can keep the stock pistons (assuming they're all in good shape), and just get new rings and stuff. If you need to rebore, you'll end up adding the cost of the boring and the cost of new pistons (500-1000) onto the parts below.

-ARP headstuds (~125)
-ARP Mainstuds (~130)
-ARP Rodbolts (50)
-Rings (~100?) I've been told Toyota rings are the best for the 7M... don't know if that's true though.
-Bearings (~150?)
-Gaskets (~300)
-HKS Stopper MHG (~323, best price i've seen?)
-Oil pump (toyota, ~300)
-Valve springs, seats and seals (~300)
-New timing belt (~100)

That list totals to around $2000... the numbers I list are just rough values that I had in my spreadsheet, you may be able to do better, and I may or may not have lowballed it. New motor mounts may be on that list too. It's fairly easy to get totally carried away on a build... and there's going to be alot of unaccounted for costs along the way. Alot of the above stuff I would consider almost manditory for a 400-450hp build: ARP fastners, new gaskets, new oil pump, new bearings... ect.

I hope this helps you somehow.

Would the Auto tranny hold 400-450hp? I plan on being somewhere in this range myself with my 89 auto. I was planning on rebulding an auto to handle the power. Thanks Bill.

Check out 7mpower.com they got a 7mgte guru who builds 7m's to see their tolerances, anyways he say's complete stock motor will push 450 hp all day long fine, really good information if you never been.
