Okay I been looking for a supra for a while. I found a 87 red supra targa turbo im about to buy it for 2 grand. Engine was rebuilt less than 20 thousand miles ago and it needs a right passenger head light left fender and a front bumper. The interior is super messy, the passenger side cloth is ripped and the center console is ripped.radio is taking out and the sterring tilt is not working. You raise it up but it will fall back down. On top of the dash board is a big rip like a knife went thorugh it. It has all original rims but one of them the tires got slashed somehow. I really want the car so bad but.. Im only 16 making 300 a month i talked to a body shop he said a couple grand would fix everything on the body. If I could find some parts the body i could talk my dad into buying it and fixing it up. Should i buy it or just keep looking for another supra.

uh the way u descrbied it....
The supra sounds like its in a wreck.

How many miles are on it?
Did u check for rust?
Check in the trunk and inspect the tire well where thespare sits.
Can u take pictures.

So your 16 making 300 a month....and u want a supra that pretty much a wreck and is 19 years old....YIKES!!

Things will be bound to break and you or your dad will be spending lots $$$ just to fix.

Seriously take your time until u find a Supra in good shape.

I hope you realize your income at this point in time is not going to support keeping that car up and running. These are high maintenance cars at their current age and condition (good example would be the one you are describing), and this car will be parked in your driveway a lot more than you'll be driving it.

It run good and everthing the car has about 180,000 miles the left fender has rust which is why i need another one. i wish i could take pics but i dont got a digital camera. Im still thinking about buying it because my freinds dad works at a body shop and fixes cars for us super cheap. The car is running on the spare and the one in the trunk is somehow slashes. I been applying to get a second job to make more money. it wont be only be me my dad will give me a couple grand to spend probly if i can get the body fixed by my self frist. The person selling own two toyota specaialist repair places and he showed me all the rebuild recipts and everything with the motor. Thing is they area im in you dont see old sports cars for sale like supra 300zx 240 preludes or stuff like that. I really love old sports cars then the newer ones

well at least talk him down to a lower price i think 2k is asking to much try to talk him down to 1000-1500

rust plus 180,000 miles, plus a F'ed up interior = low 1000's
If u plan on fixing the interior thats going to alone cost you a couple of hundred dollars.

try to ask him for a reciept as to what was built on the motor. (if he can't provide one than ask for a lower price)

if he hasnt chaged the HG and didnt put in arp hardware, i'd ask for 1000.

just to let u know if u cant do your own job on the engine and u have to repeatidly go to a shop to get things fixed u shouldnt be getting an 19+year old supra.

Do what u want, but trust all of us....you'll be spending 3+X's as much as you paid for the car just in maintainance, even more if u plan on big HP #'s

u have a cell phone camera? use that if u have too

since u said u have no older sport cars in your area, personally i'd be searching in other states, I'd spend a shit load of gas if i had to go out and find a clean supra.

and for the body parts, Im sure you can find someone parting out a car and get the parts online for CHEAPER than you can at a body shop. or you can go to a junkyard but on here you might get lucky and find one the same color.
and for high maintenence...not that big of deal, just dont beat the hell out of it. its about the same as any other Old car driving around, just expect the normal things to go wrong. i dont know why so many people say they break so much and you have to spend so much money...maybe its cuz they dont have the money to fix it when something that cost $200 breaks...?
had my car 3 years and i beat the hell out of it, but when it needs fixing i do the work myself. besides the HG and the clutch i bought to hold higher power and the jdm motor i bought cuz i melted a piston. Nothing has happened.
wow...i had to replace the alternator, headlight, radiator. Other than that...all my money goes to GAS and go FAST parts.
And when my car was stock i got abotu 280 miles a tank in town so it wasnt that bad but now i get about 12mpg. haha. but im not complaining cuz i have money.
out of all seriousness...its not that bad of car to have and not to expensive unless you plan on trying to make it go fast.
Do what you want and if you Can actually fix it and plan on it then go for it, just inspect it, Make sure those are receipts for the Supra he is selling and not something else.

Dont let anyone get you down bro.. Shoot for your dreams.. I was 16 when I bought my car... the interior was a complete mess, the driver side door was smashed, terrible mileage/ running super rich [still does], i was making no type of money to upkeep the car, but i didnt care, a Supra was my dream, and I promised myself I'd make it happen.. That was one year ago, and I have come a long way.. It takes lots of time and patience.... It wont be showroom overnight, but with a few dreams and some elbow grease, it'll be fine.. Ill post some pics of how I got my Supra one year ago.. and i posted pictures of how it is now.. ill take interior pics later.. the most important thing is having the money, this forum is the most helpful thing you could possibly get a hold of, the guys on here know their shit and dedicate their time to help newbies like us.. alot of them are gonna say pass on the car and wait for a next one.. everyone told me the same.. me and my dad said fuck that, supras dont come around here often... i originally wasnt gonna take the car because its an automatic.. Thats alright though, this summer I plan on doing a 5spd swap..
Just take it like this, If its a car that you plan to keep and build, take it and baby it.. If you're gonna try to get it, turtle wax it, and sell it for higher than you paid, then your wasting you time...

THE MOST IMPORTANT PART ON THE CAR-- CHECK THE BODY FOR RUST AS EVERYONE SAID.. MAKE SURE U DRIVE THE CAR BEFORE YOU BUY IT.. dont buy it because its a supra.. do not buy a no-start.. at 16, you dont know what could be wrong with it, or how much $$ it will take to get running.. make sure its running, and drive it.. if the engine pulls strong, then make an offer.. DO NOT PAY 2000 though.. thats a ripoff.. the car is worth a grand maybe.. make a sensible offer.. dont insult him and offer him 500.. but dont be too generous and offer 1500.. try somewhere between $900-1150.. if he takes it... youre on your way bro..

and dont forget the compression test and if it goes into gear and doesnt pop out. Im not to sure on how to fix the steering wheel as i have never taken one apart but im sure its not to bad.
And if the motor is rebuilt in my opinion its worth 2 grand. I would rather have a good runing reliable motor than a perfect interior and exterior. Those you can fix in time and you can still drive your car. but if the motor is fucked with a perfect interior...whats the good of getting the car right?
