I know it is a b@&ch, I've been swearing so much I'm making up new ones. I can't figure out how to get to the upper bolt to take it off. I've takin it off once before but I don't remember how. Should I unplug the coolant hose that goes throught the firewall to get a wrench doen in there?? It is the only thing(so far) that is holding me up from dropping my tranny and fixing my clutch. Please help. Thanks Tejon

Loosen the engine mount bolts and lower the trans a bit with a jack. Make sure that the fan doesn't get into the radiator, you may need to remove the fan. Then use about 3 feet of extensions over the top of the trans to get to the bolt.

This works well for the other upper bolt that holds the trans to the block, just don't drop it on your head!

Here is how I did it, I laid on top of the engine, looking down on the bolt. You can slip one in there, and turn it little by little, once you get the hang of it, its not bad. If i remember right, you can wiggle an arm in around the engine also to help guide the wrench, use the thinest longest wrench you can.

good luck

I have flex-a-lite fans. So what your saying is lower the reart of the tranny and reach over the top?? If so that sounds easy enough. Thanks let me know

PM grim jack...he gets his out routinely in 25 minutes :aigo:

I sent my car to Toyota to pull the tranny for my clutch fix...I was THAT frustrated with removing the pre-89 starter.....

I would say I was quite happy to pay them $450....I didnt have to stress over anything :biglaugh:

25? It takes less than 15 minutes, and most of that is jacking up the drivers side and putting it on a jack stand.

Both bolts come out the same way.

Get a buddy to slide under the car and put a wrench on the back and hold it still.

Thread 1 foot entensions in from the front of the engine - below the alternator, above the A/C, one at a time. Slide it right onto the top bolt, keep adding extensions until you are out the front of the engine but before the fans. Pull out the top bolt.

Disassemble your extensions and repeat the process again for the lower bolt, this time get your buddy under the car to slide the socket onto the bolt.

This job absolutely requires some bait (beer!) for your buddy under the car, and several feet of different length extensions. Both of which you should always have on hand when you work on a Supra anyhow, so go to the store and pickup anything that you need ahead of time.

I placed a wrech on the engine side and used 2-foot extension of 3/8" driver on the tranny side to get to the top bolt of the starter. I think one main thing to remember is to be careful not to break the knock sensor (if turbo) next to the starter..
