need an opinion: to keep or to sell

Ok I know at first most people will say keep the car.

Here is the deal:

I got the car for cheap... $500 bucks

When I got it had a bad water pump and the clutch hub was shot.

I replaced the clutch hub but was waiting on the water pump, till after the hub.

Now I have a new issue, the car won't start but I noticing more and more of the wiring harness is shot. I spliced the CPS and the O2 sensor to fix some bad wiring and I now noticed the coil pack connector was weak and broke the wiring when looking at it(on the harness side)

I got the car to DD so I could work on my miata.

Should I just hunt down a wiring harness and deal with swaping it over just to have a DD and slowly clean it up. Was looking to make it a nice simple DD with light mods(BPU). Or should I just sell it to someone that wants it for a project car(each built 7m or JZ swap)

Car info:

87 Targa
STOCK
220K on the clock before the speedo cable got broken (closer to 240-250K)
light front bumper damage
faded paint on the bumpers.


I am leaning towards just selling cause I am not sure that doing all the work is worth it at this point in time. I was asked to sell it before i replaced the clutch and told the guy if I sold it I would ask around 1500.

Choice:

A) keep car and finish fixing it and enjoy a badass DD

B) sell the car to a good home
how much is a fair price to really ask

Question is how hard is it to swap a full harness(in a parking lot) and how much are they?

you are most likely gonna have to remove the alternator and throttle body/upper intake manifold and then ofcourse get it from inside from the pcm and pull it out toyota didnt wanna make it easy and put a master connector before it enters the firewall...theres also a connector going all the way back to the tranny...i think that all i did to get my harness off...

for a rookie id say it could take up to 5 hours to remove and reinstall the harness...nothing hard just nuts bolts and corroded connectors.

90% of pre-89 turbo Supras have horrific wiring. Not sure why, but I have yet to see one with an intact engine wiring harness.

New wiring harness is around $500 from the dealer, IF you can still get it.

And it isn't very hard to replace. You could get it done in an afternoon.

ouch on that price...

so if I choice not to sell the hardest part would be finding a good pre 89 wiring.

how much does a used one going for?

I think that most of the wiring harnesses are bad because of some much heat from the Turbo engine's. (well at least for me)

Search on Ebay, ive seen them go for around $100 used.

Here's the harsh reality:
If working on it all the time bothers you, or a $500 part unnerves you...sell it, 'cause it's only going to get worse from here.

haha I understand where you coming from...

its not that a $500 part unnerves me, it just that at the giving time, I would rather spend $500 on the other car cause that is either: just shy of a MSPNP for the miata... or an 80% rebuilt FE3T motor.

working on the car doesn't brother me, I just need it to be reliably.

Also I don't want to sink a lot of money into this motor cause if I keep the supra for any real length of time, I will most likely get a 1jz.

my opinion from what you just posted . I say sell it. You will spend thousands on it before you know it.

I would suggest deciding on keeping the Supra or the Miata. Both are gonna drain your money and neither will be a reliable DD with out lots of money poured into them.

i think from what your opinion is, I have come with what I will do.

post it for sale,

and look for a cheap decent harness..

if it sell then I will dump that money into the miata or if I find a harness then I have a good long weekend to bond with the supra.

either way whether i keep this one or not... i'll get another one.
