Man, there cracking down here in North Carolina. Older models including our beloved MKIII's are spaired the horrior of an emissions test, But the real pain is poping the hood. Now in NC they get the engine code off the "ENGINE" so if you've got a swap of any kind it's reported to your insurance company and your rates go up accordingly. I was thinking of trying to get a decent 1jz swap ether feb, or March. But now I'm not too sure. What happens if you've got an engine that doesn't even exist in the US. Do they fine the hell out of you or what? I really don't want to get a MKIII and get charged the same for insurance that I would if it where a Twin Turbo MKIV. If any of you guys got some informantion help me out here.

yeah seriously. police only know hondas when checking engine codes and serials.

cops around here check serials on hondas all the time to check for stolen motors.

if a cop looked under the hood of a mkiii he wouldnt know wtf he was looking at, let alone where to find the serial number.

replacing an engine in your car, im not sure if you are legally supposed to report it to anyone? as long as the motor was sold in the US, and is the same year, or newer than your car its legal.

from insurance company to insurance company their individual rules may differ.

anyone care to enlighten?

In marlyand it is technically only legal to swap in a motor that was built AFTER the production date of your car. Historic cars are exempt from law i believe.

Its only legal to swap an engine thats been manufactured and sold at dealerships within the US. 2jzgte, 2jz, 3sgte, etc. what ever motor that made it on a model within the US (being sold from dealerships... Motorex doesnt count unless you paid them to legalize it here) is considered LEGAL. But you can have my 7mgte sticker on my timing belt cover to paste it over the 1jzgte engine code if you'd like to. And besides, who takes their JDM swapped cars to an "honest inspection location". I heard of a couple ppl who take "under-the-table" tips for giving you a sticker, but i'm not gonna mention any names... If you try to go that route, just watch out for those DMV guys... they are pretty clever. The inspection ppl (if they do not know you well) may even think that you are an undercover DMV agent trying to bribe that specific shop for any potential fines. But you gota know ppl, who know ppl, etc. etc. Anyways, just my experience...

I really really love mississippi. No emmisions, no cats required, no EGR required, no charcole can, no nothing. I can swap a twin turbo lambo v12 in my car if I so wish, and there isn't shit the can do about it :) To get an inspection sticker here, you are required to have working horn, wipers, blinkers, brake lights, tails and head lights. Side markers are not required to work. I'd be willing to bet, that if I could get a car here from japan, I would not have any problem registering it.

West Virginia's the same way. :bigthumb: I'm absolutely certain I could get away with importing a car and registering it. The only problem would be getting through customs.

lol

for all you guys and gals that continue to THINK it won't affect you think again.

What is the quickest way for a state to generate REVENUE every year on a continous basis? INSPECTIONS.

Folks it WILL get worse just because it is EASY money ;) mark my word. Soon all 50 states will have inspection again just to generate MORE revenue.

va can be strict on inspections.. and here in Bristol.. Thank god there is no emmisions.. now if i lived 7miles down the interstate.. NO inspections in TN.. woot! i really dont see the states that dont have one switching and enforcing a vehicle inspection any time soon.. although that would cut out the big ol ass mess of cars that cross the VA border :aigo:

South Carolina isnt going to have inspections ever again I think. Maybe atleast until cars start flying... Charlotte, NC is like 15 minute drive from SC border... I work in SC, i think i better move down there just so i can swap my ferrari enzo motor in my Paseo (being sarcastic) And yeah, if you do happen to be succesful in swapping out VIN numbers from different cars... I hope you dont get busted by the DMV guys, trust me, they are real haters..... and they'll take away both your cars (the running one with the fake VIN and the junk one)

Be glad you're not in California. We have one of the toughest vehicle codes in the country. No mods are allowed unless its been approved by the state, or is OEM on the same year or newer. We have dyno type smog inspections every two years. They're even talking about smog inspections on diesel vehicles.
But if you know the codes, you can still mod the car. You just can't do anything you want.

Mississippi will not have inspections... I can promise you that. That would leave 70% of the people in the state without a ride.

Casino's bring in 4.5 mil a day in state tax money. Its all good. If miss goes in the red, they will just have the companies build some more casino's on the river :)
