Hello im new to the forum just purchased a 87 na supra 5spd. I go to get it tomorrow and the guy says it has a ticking or knocking noise. I figured i would just pull it and go through the motor and rebuild it cause I want to do a na-t on it. Any thoughts on what to have it bored out to what to have done to the head? I noticed it seems the rod bearings go bad often on these motors is there such thing as a better rod bearing for these motors. Or would i be better to just buy a low mileage 7mge of ebay and then do the na-t. I already know about the HG problems on these motors but would like some input on what to have the head decked to and what hg to run. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Im a jeep guy and have mechanical ability but dont know a whole lot about the 7mge or the 7mgte.

Thanks guys.

Forgot to mention im hoping to eventually get around 400 to 450hp out of this motor will the stock bottom end handle it? Is this number acheivable with the 7mge-t? Thanks

just go with a rebuild kit for the 7mgte, so you have the lower compression pistons, which makes tuning easier. get all the electronics, fully rebuild it with good bearings, arp studs, bolts, etc, dont really bore it unless you want too, but have it honed, and decked so you can put in a metal head gasket.

for the head, just freshen it up, port it, and yes 400-500 hp on stock internals is doable

Thanks for the info but would do you consider a "good bearings"? And by freshining up the head do you mean like new valve seals? Thanks for the info cant wait to get the beast on the road and i havent even picked it up yet....LOL.

i think clevite makes pretty good bearings. freshening heads = whatever you have money for. new valve stem seals, new valves? springs? retainers? have the head decked as well for that flatness so you can do a MHG.

haha, u got a long ways to go before its on the road :)
