is there anyway to keep this thing clean? The one I have now had been on the car for about 165K and is disgusting. I just spent 15 minutes cleaning it with dish soap and hot water... THe outside is great, but the inside is still black.

If I buy a new one will it get nasty after a few hundred miles, or will it stay clean for a while?

anyone have a picture of a new/clean one installed?

These are pics of a used one I bought off of the "bay" and then ran it through my parts washer. It was a real pain to get the decades of crap out of the res, I ended up forcing rolled up paper towel into each opening to get the last little bits. It took me a good couple hour in the tank (with the pump pushing hot solvent through the unit) and then another hour just to get it looking semi clean, so 15 minutes is not going to take 20 years of neglect off.

I replaced my steering rack, all the lines and put new fluid in so I shouldn't need to clean it again for a long time. I don't know what a new one looks like but unless you are building a high dollar show car, I would just flush the system and put in new fluid.
