so i'm putting a new oil pump, timing belt, and timing belt tensioner on my 1J.

i got as far as putting everything together and on. except the timing belt still has way too much slack.

how do i correctly tension the timing belt on a 1J?

it's a greddy belt for a 1J, i double checked the part numbers.

what is the little pin part coming out of the top for?
i played with that and nothing happened.

All you do is Compress the little pin on the tensioner then stick a little hex key in between the little holes that are on the tensioner so that it stays compressed. Then you install it tighten the two bolts that hold it. after that you pull the little hex key out and there you have it your belt should be tight now.

IIRC you pull the pin out of the tensionor and it will give it tension, but dont quote me on that.

If the belt and everything else is right then all you should need to do is pull the pin and there will be tension.

i figured the pin had something to do with it.

like, pulling the pin on a grenade.
pull the pin and you get tension.

I dont know if mine is the same but through the bottom of the engine there is a whole facing down next to the crank where there is a set screw that needs a hex allen wrench.
You torque it down until the belt is firm and that should be it.
