yes the 1jz and 7m turbo use r154
non turbo uses w58
w58 shifts smoother and is easier to work on and lighter but brakes easy above 250-300hp when run hard.
R154 is a sloppy shifting bucket but somehow holds together?
A real upgrade is to get the tremec adapter and bolt a tremec 5-6 speed or richmond verry nice tranny and they are only around 2k new you cant even touch a v160 used for that and you need special gearing that mkiii doesnt come with to use it.

People have matted 2jz's up to w58's and they have held up well...you can break any tranny if you are stupid. If you have a w58 just use that. If it breaks you can always buy one later...just don't drive stupid and it should hold up fine.
