im currently recovering my seats and inserts, and i found a mystery box in my drivers rear panel. it is wired into my harness and has a antenna like wire coming out of it taped to the wheelwell in a loop. it is wired witha pinch connector so i know toyota didn't put it there. the orange sticker says "lead acid sealed battery":1zhelp:

you should see all the fun wiring stuff in my car i just found. Looks like enough power and equipment to listen in on a spy sattelite.

there should be a FCC on it somewhere.

i'm 99% sure it's a lo-jack unit.

Lojack hides these things in the most odd of places from my experience under the steering wheel, behind the glove box..etc.

All they need is 12 Volts.

How do I know if my LoJack is working?
Your LoJack is tested and certified at the time of installation. We then recommend an inspection of your LoJack every two years. Inspections cost $79* and can be arranged by calling 1-800-4-LOJACK (1-800-456-5225).

*Pricing is subject to change without notice.

What do I do if I believe my LoJack requires service?
Call us at 1-800-4-LOJACK (1-800-456-5225) to schedule an inspection of your LoJack or to talk to a Customer Service Representative who can answer any questions you may have. For faster assistance, please make sure you have your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) at the time of the call. Your VIN number is located on your LoJack I.D. card or your vehicle registration.

Does my car need to be running for LoJack to work?
No. The LoJack Unit constantly draws a very small amount of power from your vehicle's battery. Should your battery be disconnected, LoJack's backup battery will provide power.

More info for you.

ground hooks to the body at the mtng screw, the antenna goes up the wheelwell to a cardboard pad and then makes a loop back to the pad. havent tested if it is switched or constant pwr. will do that later today.

Interesting. From it's color the battery is an older model PowerSonic. I'm guessing a PS-1270. That size battery (why would stereo boosting need battery back up?) and the type of antenna indicate a transmitter. Could be an old DYI surveillance tracker. It'd help to know the cable/antenna dimensions so a stab at the frequency can be made. A pic of the guts would tell a lot too...

Very interesting! ...makes you wonder if it was security, or a suspicious spouse or parent? (tracking device...)

Hopefully NOT a "Road Warrior - a.k.a.: Mad Max" booby trap!:biglaugh:

G/L, and post if you find out definitively! I'd be curious to know for sure for future reference.

looks like a old school tracking device that used car dealers use. No payment, they track the car, with an extra set of keys and drive it away.

im very curios as to what this is, im gonna remove it and see if the car still runs. i dont know. it is on a switched circuit. im gonna say the first guess is correct. it is definatly a transmitter and it is battery backed up.

there is a fcc ident on the back
