Even after reading my "bill of rights" three times it said that I could take my car any where I please., so I did. What they didn't tell me was if I take it other than thier "blue ribbin shop they wouldn't cover it. Any one experience this? if you did, what was the outcome?? I had my car in a body shop that did excellent work. I trusted him because I had work done by him before, this time he didn't give me a reciept because he said because it was cash,. what??? I fucked myself by not having a reciept. The insurance and the body shop fucked me good.

Its fairly common knowledge that it must be an approved shop. This varies by insurance company but is for the most part universally true. In your case, at least with my insurance (state farm, love them btw) you'd need a receipt and they would refund my money minus the deductible.

Edit: you need to reword your last couple setences they make no sense. Did you or did you NOT get a receipt? If you didn't, that's your own damn fault. Cash or not, that's just a terrible idea to think its ok to not get a receipt because its cash.

insurance companies all operate the same way, whether it be auto, health, etc.

You can take your car to whatever shop you want, as long as it's approved by the insurance company. if it's not approved, you can expect to pay everything out of pocket.

how my health insurance is, I can go to whoever I want as long as the insurance company says its alright (even if it's not the best I can be getting)

actually id be calling you state insurance commisioner, they cannot tell you where to have it repaired .. that is illegal. the only thing is you need to get a receipt and they only have to pay you the lowest estimate - your deductable. i do my own body repairs, they have to pay me. they cant even require a post repair inspection. they are insuring the value of the car... not the car itself. they pay you for your lost value.. it is your decision if you want to repair it.

When I got into an accident with my Supra, I took it to the most expensive body shop I could think of, let them total it out and then the insurance cut me a check for $2,800. I then bought the Supra back for $500 and fixed it myself for $1000.

Here in NY as far as I know, the insurance company can NOT tell you where you must take your car. That is YOUR right. That may vary by state...

There is alot of misinformation in this thread. As fixitman said, it is illegal for them to tell you where to have it repaired. They have "approved shops" to make things "easier". You can take it to any shop. The proper steps would be the shop contacts the insurance co, the adjuster comes to the shop, they both look at the car together and negotiate the price. If you went to a shop not on the approved list, AND did not tell the shop it was an insurance job you may have fucked yourself, but only for the difference between the inital estimate made by the insurance company and the final bill.

thanks, I did not get a reciept. as I've said, in the past this guy was a stand up kind of guy , he's always fixed his mistake before with out incident. I think he didn't give me one because he realized he fucked up the job, the paint didn't match, and he didn't want to redo it. Shop helped me get fucked. I geuss I learned a big lesson.

since it was "cash" you you pay them a little bit more to have it on record?
I did go back to ask for one, he smart, He didn't give me one, because he realized he fucked up, with out a reciept, he knows I can't sue him or any thing. I fucked my self, I'm too trusting, I would have been diffrent if I didn't deal with him before, before it wasn't a problem, he'd fix it.

Did you even read my post? Regardless of what you did, the insurance company still has to give you a check for the amount valued on the initail assesment made by the adjuster. It will likely be less than what you payed but still a good chunk of change.

O.K. I fucked my self, I didn't mention that it as an insurance claim, because the insurance company already issued a check for $350 dollars, and the body shop qouted me $300. for the repair so, I tought, whats the diffrence if I tell him or not, I have the money from the insurance, the bill is three hundred, I'm good, I'm covered.....yeah I'm a dummy.

Yep, I read your post,..and thanks. No, The adjuster and the body shop did not negoiate together. He thought I was gonna bring it to one of "thier" shops, I bought it to a guy that I thought I could trust. The bill was $300.00 the check was $350.00 He did excellent work in the past, so I trusted him. But he fucked up. He knew he fucked up so he didn't issue me a reciept. I recieved a check even before I went t the shop thinking if the shop wanted more money we would call the insurance company, yeah I'll admit, I'm a fool.

go to the shop and get a receipt. If they do not give you one find out some way to see if they purchased parts for your car via bank statement or something to prove you got work done and you want a receipt if they do not give you one.

what has happened is the body shop did a cash repair, he wants no trace of the repair so he doesnt have to report the income. id go back demanding a reciept for the work, and id also make him repaint untill it matched. if he refuses threaten to call the irs and better buisness and report him.
