My first HG job, need your idea, lots of pics

HI, This is my first head gasket job and i need your idea. What do you think about this :

I get the car last year and engine was running well but with a bad cam seal.

Engine was rebuild since 20 000miles. But the rebuild sheet of the machine shop says 58lbs on the head bolt. Its the main reason why i decide to redo it instead of changing only the cam seal. Rubber hose was also bad and almost all are now trash with all the oil squirting everywhere.

So now, what i want to know is what do you think about the block surface? It look like there small pitt on it. DOes cooper spray with stock headgasket will correctly seal on this surface?

If i want to check the head myself. TSRM says no more than .1mm between head and straight edge? is that correct?

if only replacing with a stock hg i would scrape the block clean and make sure its straight. throw some tranny fluid on top the pistons and a little on the ring and let it soak to clean them off.

I’ve never looked at a cylinder after I honed it and ran it for a while. But that looks like it was honed fairly recently, like not even broke in.
I would not use any old HG either get a Toyota one or even better get a MHG and at least get the arp studs

As for the rust the way to get it out is to have a shop clean it in a dip or whatever they do to clean blocks. you could try scrubbing it with vinegar
that's assuming your not doing any thing to the bottom like pistons, bearings.
if you are stripping the block down, you can use a metal prep to get the rust out. I would not use it with the bearings still in it might get on the bearings and damage them.

I will go with a stock Toyota HG and ARP for sure.
Could it be a problem if i leave the surface rust in the water pass?
I dont want to strip the block because piston were changed 20 000miles ago.

Can i change the bearing only with removing the oil pan?

the pitting looks like excess gasket i would clean it really nice till you can eat off it.

but yeah i would clean it to the best of your ability and make sure its straight.

look like i will need to deck the block

Block was already deck at least 1 time. Could it be deck again??
i hate to have to remove piston since block was completely machined 20k miles ago. It only need to be deck to get a nice surface.

at this point I would try sanding the rest off, get some 400 grit sand paper wet-sand it and see if you can get it cleaner. It does look like there's still head gasket on there, I'm positive that the "pitting" will come off. Dont go to far with the sanding your just trying to buff the crap off. and stuff the cylinders, oil passage, coolant wells with paper towels or cap them with something, don't let the sanding water/dust get in any hole.

what I would be looking at is all the scratches on the surface where it is clean, i hope there not everywhere. it looks like some one used 80 grit paper on the poor thing.

You need a better scraper then....that isn't pitting it's left over gasket material! If it was pitting then it would pit in the coolant jackets and not all over the place....

Spend more time cleaning that block!

Should look close to this or better....did this by hand on my 111,000 mile block so you should be able to do better.

^agreed, spend more time cleaning the block thats left over gasket, note that the pitting is only in place where the gasket touches the block theres no pitting around the places it does not touch like the coolant passages and around the bolt holes.
