So I picked up this car about 2 years ago from a very.................... lack-of-knowlegded kid:1zhelp: I found it on craigslist for sale not too far from my house. Initially he said $2000/trade. When I checked it out, it looked somewhat clean but I didnt think it was worth it and he didnt want to trade for my car so I left. He called me 2 weeks later and said he had to move to southern california in the morning so he wanted to trade. :icon_bigg When I got to his house, THEN he mentions that he think he blew the motor and now it wont stay running once you step on the gas. :nono: Too make a long story short, I told him there was no way I was trading a perfectly running car for a broke down car, so he asked me to tow it away to where ever for him since I had AAA and he had no where to take the car. He gave a few dollars for my time, the keys, the CLEAN title, and went in the house irritated. I towed the car home. The next morning, I popped the hood and immediately got excited. The engine wasnt blown...... the lower intercooler piping fell off :3d_frown: So I put the piping back on and and there was my new daily driver :icon_bigg

The car is a 1986.5 5speed. He had a friend do a horrible NA-T conversion with wires everywhere. After about a month, the engine started knocking :3d_frown:. so I went on craigslist and found a 7mgte for sale. The guy told me it was a good engine, nothing wrong with it. At the time, I knew nothing about mechanics so I took his word for it and he swapped out the engines for me. I had a few supras before and I could tell the it didnt feel right but he insisted that everything was fine, so I went home. 6 months later, I'm sitting at a stop light with my girlfriend on my way to eat. The light goes green so I casually start rolling and then POP!!! goes the motor..... bhg and rod knock

So the car's been sitting for about a year now. I finally got tired of watching it sit so I'm now starting a build. I thought it would be a good idea to make a build thread so I can get some knowledge from the more experienced. i've been doing my research and learning alot from this forum so I have some ideas on what I want to do. My goal for now is 400-450rwhp but ultimately I will be shooting for 600 down the road. All comments and suggestions are welcome and appreciated. Thanks for checking out my build

Nice find. Boost leak immediately came to mind when I read it was stalling. Good luck with the build. Keep those pics coming.

I picked up a rebuilt 7m for $600 but after talking to a fellow supra owner, I'm tearing it down and re-doing just to make sure everything is done right. I'm not quite sure if I will be going forged quite yet since my budget is very low but i will be installing a metal head gasket and ARPs at the very least. I went to the junkyard the other day and I picked up a complete set of interior trunk paneling for my car for $20 :D. And last week, I picked up an r154 for $250 ::hooters:: Today me and a friend are going to work on getting the rest of the engine bay cleared out so i can scrub it down, and if we have time after that, we're going to sort out some electrical issues while the car is gutted. Pictures later tonight

Here's one more pic of the head on the blown motor and a few of the engine as we got it out of the car. We took the head off of the new rebuilt motor to check everything out. I will have pics of that later tonight. one of the bearings were bent :3d_frown: so i will be replacing all of them again. :: angry ::

The manifold boost leak would heat up that part of the head most and over time cause the gasket to fail. From there you could get rodknock.
Lesson is, don't let things go too long.

and thats pretty much what happened. Thanks for checkin out my build thread Dave. When you comin back out to help me work on it? Oh and I have a friend that does porting and polishing so that will get done soon also. I plan to take the motor to the machine shop this fall so they have all fall and winter to work on it. In the meantime, I am going to buy as many parts as I can and then pick up the motor in the spring and put everything together. THanks for all your help so far Dave. Much appreciated!

I have this on my rebuilt motor. Can anyone tell me what this is? And is it a vital part that is needed for the engine to perform properly?

I've got some projects coming up for work i have to handle plus some rims to paint.
Maybe next week, I'm not too sure.
Make a check list of things to do to stay on track/forgettion prevention ;)
