I think it gives you a more aggresive shift point, meaning a higher RPM before shifting. But I drive a 5SPD and may be wrong.

The Ect button or electronic controlled trans changes your shift pattern for gas saving slower driving norm or high spirited shifting (higher rpm shifts) in the other setting.

the red button is a shift lock button. If you need to move the shifter while the power is disconnected then press the red button and you can move the shifter through the range.

Also it is my understanding that is you are in the normal setting and you "punch" the gas it will automatically treat the tranny as if it were in the performance setting (PWR setting). Correct me if I'm wrong.

For ordinary driving, Toyota recommends that you use the "NORM" position to improve fuel economy. For powerful acceleration, use the "PWR" position. In the "PWR" position, the "PWR" position indicator light is on and the transmission is shifted up and down at a higher vehicle speed than in the "NORM" position.
