My coolant system froze

I recently replaced some parts that required me to drain my coolant/water mixture. When I went to refill the radiator, I realized I didn't have enough coolant to mix the proportions correctly. I filled up most of the system with distilled water and then forgot to add more coolant.
Well, last week the temperature dropped far below freezing, and my car was not prepared. Obliviously, I tried to start it up. It made a terrible screeching noise like a belt was bad, but I just thought it was because my fan clutch is seized. After starting it two more times, the noise went away. I waited for the car to warm up for about ten minutes, and the water temperature gauge barely moved but then rapidly went halfway up in the span of ten seconds. After I was sure it had stopped rising, I began to gently drive it. I turned on the heater, but it continued blowing cold air and soon the radiator started overheating.
After getting the car off the road, I popped the hood and the radiator was spewing out steam and water. I went to check the coolant overflow resevoir and realized it was still frozen solid with the sensor and hose stuck in it.
Anyway, I eventually got it into a garage where it will stay for the rest of the winter. I already managed to get the system thawed out and ran lots of coolant through it, but now the water temp gauge is barely creeping up.

Now the question: What things did I probably mess up and what should I replace?

thermostat, put some stop leak in the radiator.

thats honestly all the knowledge i bear, dont take my word for it. just trying to help you out til a pro takes over.

seriously only by tearing it down and seeing where it froze.

a hose freezing up no prob, having it freeze in your block is a different story.

check your feeze plugs. could have popped your rad, bhg is possible.... man theres just so much that can go wrong with this one..... start small and work up. pressure chekc the full system to see if its ok also and a compression test.

Well, I was planning on pulling off the head anyways, so I will be tearing out most of the engine bay except the block. How will I be able to tell where it froze if it is not dripping coolant?

dont put stop leak in the radiator. it makes a mess of your entire cooling system. just fix the problem at it's source, and avoid "add ons" such as stop leak. do it right the first time, then you dont have to worry about flushing out tiny aluminum shavings from your cooling system when you actually do find and fix the problem.

freezing in the car

if the radiator froze you can guarantee the block also froze. I have seen ice break blocks at the cylinder walls.

You best pray that you did not mess the engine block up. And next time. BUY antifreeze. Put it in the microwave and then put it in the car hot after this. But you probably damaged something. What? Who knows. Need a tear down.

I learned my lesson back in 86 when I was 16. Rebuilt my dad's 1972 Dodge pickup which had a 318. Had planned on putting the antifreeze in, but got busy and forgot. Freeze came a couple weeks later and I went out the next morning and the freeze plug was on the ground. Luckily some block sealant fixed it and it was running when he sold it. Maybe you will get lucky too.

I'm finally going to get some time to work on the car soon. I already ran the engine after adding a gallon of anti-freeze, once the weather got up to about 50 degrees. Is there anything else I should do before I start pulling parts off?

Well, if there weren't any glaring problems (plumes of smoke, milkshake under oil cap) when you were running it just look for leaks (maybe get that flourescent stuff?) and hope for the best...
