Ok so i bought this 87 supra na. The guy said his son took it out and when it came back it had a tick/knock so now that i have it home i really dont believe its rod knock. Not only does it seem to be coming from the top of the engine but it comes and goes and it keeps throwing the check engine light. It is a pretty loud sound but I just dont believe its a rod knock. The guy did tell me they had the timing belt replaced recently could they have got the timing way off? The car seems like a complete slug but yet it fires right up. Any thoughts would be great just trying to get this thing on the road.

Thanks

Retrieve the CEL from where ever it keeps getting thrown to and then check for codes. On the knock you'll have be more specific as to location and sound. Myself, I typically avoid buying engines that are making noise...

Keep in mind i have a jeep and untill now have never owned a dohc engine. Im taking it that a CEL is some kind of trouble code? I have no haynes manual or a TSRM so I have no real idea what your talking about. Can anyone tell me how to check the timing?

Remove the EFI fuse for 30 seconds to clear the codes as they may be dated. 12 is associated with the cam position signal and 52 is a fault in the knock sensor system. Both can make the engine run like crap. For the 12 check the CPS wiring and pickup coils, also check the STA signal from the starter since a lack of STA can cause a 12. For the 52 check the knock sensor(s) wiring. Hydrogen can be recovered from the battery ;)
