backround info: ive had my 89 t since xmas last year. right away the origional motor went (121k on it) so the guy i bought it from offerend to put in a replacement motor. he got another 7mgte with about 65k on it and put it in himself. i got it back and it ran well for about a month then this horendus smoking started. discusted i left the car sit in my driveway over the summer.

last week i started the car again and investigated since i ahd finally come across some time to invest into the car. after running the car and watching it smoke after a minute of running i noticed a wet spot on the flange where the turbo bolts up to the manifold.

so i i took a trip to daves and he gave me that gasket and a few others i didn't put on (manifold to motor and o2 housing gasket). i removed the ic piping and the acordian and downpipe and everything necessary to pull the turbo and i noticed this while i was under the car as i pulled the down pipe..

so i was pretty sure this gasket was the problem. while removing the turbo i noticed that 2 of the 4 bolts were darn near hand tight!.. i just loved that (take the sarcasm). so i pulled the turbo and took at look at the origional gasket and sure enough it was cracked from where it meets the center of the flange to the top. not to mention my turbo wasn't even on my manifold tight. so i put that gasket on and bolted everything back up. as i was finished i decided to check the bolts on the manifold too (im a retard since i could ahve done it much easier having the turbo off) but i ran my 14mm wrence across them and sure enough iw as able to righten all of them. so then i ran the car and it was great. its still running perfect but i notice on short trips i get a little smoke. the smoke comes from the front of the motor and it seems to eb comming from the manifold right where the cam position sensor is located. could this jsut be oil dripping fmor my cam position sensor because it does have a bad seal and i just never got around to replacing it. would that cause a little bit of oil on short drives? if tis not that could it be the front bolt on the manifold not tight? one other thing that came to mind is my oil feed not being tight enough or could my valve cover gasket be bad? any imput would be great and im just not sure what to check or look for. please suggest any other possible ways this thing can be smoking.

i've been keeping an eye on my oil and it seems to be fine. the motor runs great but tis jsut a little bit of white smoke on short trips. on longer trips its fine and not a trace of smoke.

thanks

another question now, i
since the motor swap i can hear my turbo very well (stock ct-26). i can hear it spool and wind down and i noticed a bit of oil in my ic piping when i removed it. i know tis normal for turbo cars to consume oil but isn't it a bad thing to see oil in the ic piping?

theres a little dab of oil right there. there was a bit of shaft play when i checkd while the turbo was off. is that normal or bad for a turbo with about 65k on it?

thanks guys

and something for you..

i just had to see if the compressor wheel really spooled at idle :icon_razz

its not really normal for turbo cars to consume oil. your turbo is on its way out. i didnt watch the video but dont expect the turbo to last too long.

it may last a few thousand miles but plan on replacing it soon.

alright. how will i know when it goes and what is a good replacement? will the car not run once the torbo gets to a certain point? i ahve the origional ct-26. its got no shaftplay whatsoever but i was told it wasn't in too good a shape. would it be worth getting something like sound performance turbo? ive read good thigns about them. if i was going to replace a turbo id want something that would fit the stock manifold and work witht he stock fuel system at a low boost application because im not ready to beat on the car yet. it would still need a headgasket or atleast new fasteners to retorque the head, need injectors and a fuel pump, a logger, boost gauge, boost controllerand such. plus im saving up to perform a tranny swap so if the turbo went basicly im looking to getsomething i can run at waste gate preasure for now but have the potential to power the car to a low 13-hi 12 second pass.

About the cps. Most of the times the O-ring in the cps is rock hard.
It could cause oil to leak onto your manifold for sure. :)

The O-ring is 2$ from your dealer and it's 15 minutes to replace it.
Please have a timing light standby to set your timing correctly afterwards.

thanks guys. i think it is the cps so ill have to get that oring. i can see where it leaks and falls on the heatshield. my friend had the same problem and just got a whole new cps. as far as the turbo goes. im guessing its bad that i hear it as lould as i do. and is it really suposed to wind down longer then it did in the video when the car was shut off? it was only idleing. im not sure whats good or not it was my first time seeing it open compressor wheel. thanks for the replys.
